PITTSBURGH- Duquesne's B.J. Monteiro (Waterbury, Conn./Crosby) has been named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week for his performance in Duquesne's back-to-back wins over Bowling Green and Houston Baptist last week.
The 6-6 senior swingman averaged 26.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists on 66.7 percent shooting in the two games. He began the week going 11-of-14 from the field in scoring a career-high 28 points in the win over Bowling Green. The Connecticut native added 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals against the Falcons. Monteiro followed that by setting a new career rebound high in posting a 24-14 double-double in DUs' 118-72 win over HBU. Monteiro, who completed the double-double with four minutes left in the first half, also tied his career high with 5 assists and added a pair of blocks against the Huskies.
This is the first Atlantic 10 award for Monteiro who became Duquesne's 35th 1,000-point scorer early in the Houston Baptist game.
Duquesne (9-5), winner of three in a row, opens Atlantic 10 play at home against Saint Joseph's on Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 7:00 p.m.
MONTEIRO SIDELINED
Duquesne head coach Ron Everhart has announced that senior B.J. Monteiro (Waterbury, Conn./Crosby) will miss approximately 2-4 games after being injured in an off-the-court incident over the weekend.
Monteiro received stitches in both his left hand and chin as the result of being inadvertently hit by a bottle after an argument broke out between two nearby individuals at an establishment on Pittsburgh's South Side on New Year's Eve.
"We constantly emphasize using discretion in the decisions you make off the court," said Everhart. "As a senior co-captain, B.J. has an obligation to set an example for his teammates. Even though he was not directly involved, the decision he made led to him being in the wrong place at the wrong time and he's now paying the price. I'm disappointed that he had to learn this lesson the hard way."
Monteiro, Duquesne's second-leading scorer (15.2 ppg.) and leading rebounder (5.7 rpg.), has started 13 of 14 games this season. He has played in a team-high 77 consecutive games.
