PITTSBURGH - The Duquesne volleyball team improved to 12-4 overall and 2-0 in Atlantic 10 Conference play after its 3-2 victory over Charlotte on Sunday afternoon.
The match, which lasted two hours and 22 minutes, saw Liz Homan record a game-high 18 kills and Taylor Jones a match-best 50 assists. Sara Scheirman recorded a double-double of 17 kills and 23 digs.
Charlotte (6-8, 0-2 A-10) started off with the upper hand in the match. In the first set with the score tied at 22-22. The 49ers rattled off three straight points to win 25-22.
It looked like Charlotte would roll in the second set, building a 20-8 lead. However, Duquesne went on to score 13 consecutive points to take a 21-20 lead. The set would see six more ties before back-to-back kills by Jones and Scheirman made the score 29-27 which evened the match at 1-1.
With the third set tied at 21-21, the Dukes scored four straight points - two Foschia kills and two Charlotte errors - to win 25-21 and take a 2-1 match advantage.
Duquesne was leading the fourth set 16-15 before committing three straight attack errors. The 49ers would use the momentum of its 18-16 lead to win the set 25-22, tying the match at 2-2.
In the fifth and decisive set, Duquesne had leads of 5-2 and 6-3 early on. Charlotte would eventually tie the contest at 9-9. The Dukes scored the next four points making the score 13-9. The 49ers would counter with four straight, tying the set at 13-13. But a Charlotte service error followed by a Jones kill ended the set 15-13 and the match 3-2.
The Dukes take to the road for the next four matches beginning Sept. 30th at Xavier. The next home match is Oct. 14th versus La Salle. Both matches begin at 7:00 p.m.
