TORONTO - Sean Johnson converted a big three-point play with 10.7 seconds left and B.J. Monteiro hit a pair of free throws with 3.9 seconds remaining to ice the game as Duquesne upped its Canadian tour record to 3-0 with an 82-78 win over A-Game Hoops at Newnham Sports Centre on the campus of Seneca College in Toronto.
A-Game Hoops, which is made up of former NCAA and professional players from Canada, took a 78-77 lead on a 3-pointer by Matt Curtis with 22 seconds left.
On the next possession, Monteiro drove the lane and missed. Johnson battled for the rebound and hit a twisting layup while drawing a foul. He converted the free throw to put the Dukes up two. A-Game ran a play to get Curtis a 3-point attempt from the corner, but the shot attempt was short and Monteiro came up with the rebound and was fouled. He hit the two free throws for the final margin.
T.J. McConnell, who hit four 3-pointers, led the Dukes with 18 points and four steals. Johnson scored 15 of his 17 in the second half and Monteiro, who had three 3-pointers, finished with 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Andre Marhold added 13 points - including nine in the second half - and five boards for DU.
Former George Washington (1999) and Drake (2001-02) player Andry Sola led A-Game with 14 points. Mike King, a 1,000-point scorer for Green Bay from 2000-04, added 13 points.
Monteiro opened the game with back-to-back 3-pointers as the Dukes jumped out to a 23-10 lead after one quarter in the game which was played under FIBA rules.
King and Sola, who go 6-8, 240 and 6-7, 235 respectively, combined for 11 in the second quarter as A-Game cut the DU lead to 40-38 at the half.
Johnson scored nine points in the first 5:30 of the third quarter as Duquesne built a 61-51 lead through three quarters.
A-Game, which hit 10 3-pointers, scored the first six points of the fourth quarter before Sola tied it at 71-71 on a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 3:38 to go.
Duquesne, which also hit 10 3-pointers, went 14-of-21 from the foul line including 6-of-11 in the second half.
Immediately following the game, the Dukes boarded a bus for the one-hour-and-thirty-minute drive to St. Catherines for a game against Brock University.
Brock has played a pair of NCAA Division I schools this month. The Badgers lost to Murray State 79-39 on August 5 and fell to North Florida, 85-81 on August 9.
Duquesne will conclude its trip to Canada will with a rematch against A-Game Hoops at 7:00 p.m. on Monday.
