Dukes Post Second Win Over Phase 1 Elite, 78-61

TORONTO - B.J. Monteiro scored 27 points and T.J. McConnell added seven points, 10 assists and five steals as Duquesne defeated Phase 1 Elite for the second time in less than 24 hours, 78-61, at Newnham Sports Centre on the campus of Seneca College in Toronto.

The win upped DU's Canadian tour record to 2-0 with three games remaining.

Redshirt freshman Derrick Martin added 11 points, nine rebounds and three blocks off the bench for the Dukes who broke a 19-19 tie with a 20-4 run to close out the first half.

Phase 1, which hit nine 3-pointers, pulled within 11 with four minutes to go before McConnell intercepted a pass and fed Andre Marhold for a dunk and followed that with a pass to Mike Talley who converted a 3-pointer to put DU up 76-58.

Phase 1 jumped out to an 8-2 lead before P.J. Torres tied it at 16-16 on a jumper. It was 19-19 before Monteiro scored, McConnell stole the ball and fed Sean Johnson for a layup and Johnson made a steal and layup to put the Dukes up six.

Martin then had a follow dunk and put back to give Duquesne a double-digit lead as the Dukes pulled away to lead 39-23 at the half.

Phase 1 pulled to within nine at 65-56 with just under eight minutes to go before Monteiro, who had 16 in the second half, and McConnell, who had seven assists and three steals in the second 20 minutes, led DU's late charge.

Andre Marhold and Johnson added eight points each for Duquesne. Talley added five assists.

Duquesne concludes its trip with a Sunday split doubleheader against A-Game Hoops at 2:00 and Brock University at 8:00 p.m.

The trip will conclude with a 7:00 p.m. game on Monday night versus A-Game Hoops.

NOTE: The game at Brock University was a late addition, broadcast availability of that game is to be determined.

NOTES

• Monteiro, Marhold, Johnson, McConnell and Evans started for the second time in as many games for Duquesne ... Talley and Jones were the first two off the bench.

• The Dukes finished with four 3-pointers, with Monteiro accounting for three (Talley had the other).

• DU went 4-of-9 from the foul line.

• Duquesne assisted on 24 of 35 field goals.

• The Dukes have added an additional game to the tour. Following Sunday's 2:00 game vs. A-Game Hoops in Toronto, the Dukes will make the hour-plus drive to St. Catherines to face Brock University at 8:00 p.m. (audio streaming of the added game is TBD).
