2011 NABC All-District Teams
PITTSBURGH - Duquesne seniors Bill Clark and Damian Saunders were both named All-District 4 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, it was announced today.
Clark was named First Team and Saunders, a First Team pick last season, was named to the Second Team. It is the first time since Derrick Alston and James Hargrove were named Second Team in 1992 that two Dukes received NABC honors in the same season.
Clark was joined on the NABC District 4 First Team by St. Bonaventure's Andrew Nicholson, Xavier's Tu Holloway and Justin Harper and Kevin Anderson of Richmond.
The 6-5 Redondo Beach, Calif. native is the 12th Duquesne player to be named First Team NABC All-District joining Saunders (2010) and former teammate Aaron Jackson who was named in 2009. Other DU first-team selections include: Derrick Alston (1994), Mark Stevenson (1990), Rick Suder (1986), Norm Nixon (1977), Willie Somerset (1962, 1964 & 1965), Sihugo Green (1954, 1955 & 1956), Dick Ricketts (1953, 1954 & 1955), Jim Tucker (1954), Chuck Cooper (1950) and Ed Dahler (1950).
This is the first time since 1954-56 (Jim Tucker, Dick Ricketts and Sihugo Green) that Duquesne has had three different players named First Team NABC All-District in consecutive seasons.
Saunders is the first two-time All-District pick since Alston, who was Second Team in 1992 and First Team in 1994. He is the ninth player in school history to earn NABC All-District in multiple seasons.
Saunders, who was named First Team All-Atlantic 10 earlier this week, holds DU school records for steals (268), blocks (290), games played (124), games started (113) and dunks (164). He ranks 12th on the scoring list (1,468) and third in rebounds (993). Saunders is averaging 12.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.3 steals and 2.6 blocks per game. He is the only player in NCAA history with over 250 career assists, steals and blocks.
Clark, a Second Team All-Atlantic 10 pick who leads the Dukes with a 16.1 ppg. scoring average, ranks second all-time in games played (123) and third in career 3-pointers (219). He is currently eighth on the all-time scoring list with 1,575 points.
Selected and voted on by member coaches of the NABC, the 245 student-athletes, from 24 districts, are eligible for the State Farm Coaches' Division I All-America teams, to be announced on Saturday, April 2, at 9:30 a.m. (EDT) at the Hilton Americas Hotel in Houston during the NABC Convention and NCAA® Final Four®.
