PITTSBURGH - Duquesne University head men's basketball coach Ron Everhart announced today that Greg Gary has been hired as assistant coach.
Gary, who was recruited by Everhart as a player over 20 years ago and was later part of Everhart's staff at McNeese State in 1997-98, was on the Duquesne staff for the 2007-08 season prior to accepting the head coaching job at Centenary in April of 2008.
Gary brings 17 years of NCAA Division I experience to the Dukes bench. "Greg has coached at the highest level as an assistant and has now added two years of Division I head coaching experience," said Everhart. "He is going to be a tremendous addition to our staff. Our relationship goes back a long way. I'm honored and pleased to have him back at Duquesne."
The 40-year-old Gary, who took over a Centenary program that won 10 Summit League games in the four years prior to his arrival, won nine conference games in his two seasons as head coach. He coached last season after the school announced in July 2009 that it would seek reclassification as a NCAA Division III member.
In his one season at Duquesne, Gary was part of a staff that led the Dukes to their first winning season since 1993-94 - and second in 22 years - with a 17-13 record in 2007-08. The `08 Dukes ranked in the top 10 nationally in assists/g. (3rd), blocks/g. (3rd), scoring (5th) and steals (9th) and DU's 82.3 ppg. scoring average was its highest since 1974-75.
Gary spent six of the seven seasons prior to his first stint at Duquesne as an assistant in the Big East at Miami, Fla. (2000-01 to 2003-04) and USF (2004-05 to 2006-07, note: USF competed in Conference USA in 2004-05). He began his coaching career at Tulane (1993-94 to 1996-97) and returned to the Green Wave for two more seasons (1998-99 to 1999-00) after spending a year under Everhart at McNeese State (1997-98). He has accompanied teams to a total of eight post-season appearances and recruited or coached eight players who have spent time on National Basketball Association rosters.
"I'm excited to have the opportunity to work with coach Everhart again," said Gary. "We have a long history together and I look forward to using my experience to assist him in the continued resurrection of the Duquesne program."
A native of basketball-rich Anderson, Ind., Gary played point guard for three seasons at Tulane (1989-90 to 1991-92), where he was recruited by Everhart. Gary, who finished his career as Tulane's all-time assist leader, helped lead the Green Wave to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1991-92.
Gary graduated from Anderson High School in Anderson, Ind. in 1988 prior to enrolling at Aquinas College in Nashville, Tenn. which was a junior college at the time. He transferred to Tulane following his freshman season.
Gary completed his bachelor's degree in sports management at Tulane in 1992.
Gary and his wife, Claudia, have three daughters, Gabrielle, Logan and Alexandra.
