DENVER - The Duquesne lacrosse team fell 16-8 in its season-opener to Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon. The match was a neutral site contest played at the University of Denver.

After missing all of last season with an injury, Kat McNish returned to action to score one goal and dish out a pair of assists. In her first collegiate match, Lauren Johnson netted a hat-trick, scoring on three of her four shots.

Casey Denk picked up a game-high three ground balls and caused five turnovers.

The Seawolves jumped out to an early 3-0 lead just 3:37 into the match. Meghan Frederick set-up McNish at the 24:55 mark of the first half to within a pair of goals at 3-1.

Unfortunately, Cailin Colgrove's goal from Riley Schamburg would be the only other goal from DU the rest of period, as SBU took a commanding 11-2 lead into halftime.

Stony Brook would increase its lead to 15-2 before Johnson's first goal of the afternoon on an assist to Lauren Aeschbacher with 12:37 remaining in the second half. SBU would answer 58 seconds later making the score 16-3.

Duquesne would finally find its offense in the game's final 10 minutes. Johnson would score on back-to-back free position shots and Meredith Dunn assisted on a Katie Rekart goal to get the Dukes within 10 goals at 16-6.

McNish would assist on goals from Denk and Frederick in the final minute to close out the game's scoring.

The Dukes will remain in the Rocky Mountains to play the University of Denver on Monday afternoon. Match time is at 3:00 p.m.
