PITTSBURGH - Duquesne University learned today that freshman forward/center Derrick Martin (Montgomery, Ala./Flora MacDonald Academy) has been ruled a partial qualifier by the NCAA. As a partial qualifier Martin will be on scholarship and will be eligible to practice with the team this season. He will not be permitted to travel or play in games.
"I'm pleased with the NCAA decision," said head men's basketball coach Ron Everhart. "Being able to be part of the team this season will benefit Derrick both athletically and academically. In addition to being a very good basketball player, Derrick is a great young man. He is going to be a big part of our future and I look forward to him having a great career at Duquesne."
The 6-9, 210-pound Martin averaged 14.0 points, 15.0 rebounds and 7.0 blocked shots per game this past season at Flora MacDonald Academy in Red Springs, N.C. The Alabama native was cited by ESPN Recruiting's Paul Biancardi as one of the spring of 2010 top unsigned players "flying under the radar" at the time of his signing in May. Martin attended George Washington Carver High School in Montgomery, Ala. prior to enrolling at Flora MacDonald.
Duquesne hosts exhibition games on Oct. 30 vs. La Roche (7:00 p.m.) and on Nov. 8 vs. Lycoming (7:00 p.m.) prior to opening the 2010-11 regular season at home against Bluefield State on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 7:00 p.m.
