PITTSBURGH - Duquesne junior point guard Eric Evans (Detroit, Mich./Northwestern) will undergo surgery on Wednesday to repair a fracture in his right foot suffered during a scrimmage at Saturday's Fanfest.
The 5-11, 210-pound Detroit native is expected to be out for approximately eight weeks.
"I feel for Eric because he put in a lot of time over the summer preparing for the start of the season," said head coach Ron Everhart.
"From a coaching standpoint, losing a productive veteran guard with Eric's leadership skills and experience makes it that much more difficult. Any time you lose a player with over 650 points and nearly 200 assists its going to have an impact on a team."
Evans, one of four returning starters, said he felt a "pop" in his right foot while making a cut during the scrimmage. He will have a screw put in at the base of his fifth metatarsal to stabilize the fracture.
Evans, who has played in every game in his Duquesne career (66 in a row), averaged 10.0 points and handed out 121 assists in 32 games - all starts - last season. The 121 assists were the third-most by a DU sophomore. His 33 career double-digit scoring games and 655 career points rank third on the team. Evans was named to the Pittsburgh Basketball Club Pro-Am Summer League all-league team this past summer.
Evan joins senior forward David Theis on the Duquesne sidelines. Theis has been out since the last week of September with a third degree ankle sprain. He is expected to be out for another 2-4 weeks.
The Dukes host exhibition games on Oct. 30 vs. La Roche (7:00 p.m.) and on Nov. 8 vs. Lycoming (7:00 p.m.) prior to opening the 2010-11 regular season at home against Bluefield State on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 7:00 p.m.
