Duquesne's swimming team opened its 2010-11 campaign Friday evening at James Madison and trail the host Dukes and Richmond halfway through the two-day event.
Freshman Meghan Smith made an immediate impact for the Dukes capturing first place in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:05.54. She also turned in a third place performance with a time of 1:56.42 in the 200 freestyle.
Sophomore Miriam McGeath also excelled, finishing second in the 200 IM in 4:37.19 and fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.32.
"I thought the ladies did well for the first meet of the season," said head coach David Sheets. "They swam with a lot of enthusiasm and kept working hard through the entire race. We were not as sharp as the other two teams but I expected this considering the bus ride and where we are with the training. I am certain tomorrow will be much better."
Day two action will begin Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m.
