PITTSBURGH - Monmouth scored on four-straight first half possessions to take a 31-7 halftime lead in cruising to a 44-17 win over Duquesne at Rooney Field.
The win was the first for the Hawks (1-3, 1-0), who were playing their Northeast Conference opener. Duquesne dropped to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Kyle Frazier completed 15-of-29 passes for 232 yards and a touchdown to lead Monmouth which recorded a school record six interceptions.
True freshman Marty Mitchell came off the bench to throw for 135 yards and two touchdowns, but was intercepted four times for Duquesne. Starter Sean Patterson, who was hobbled from an ankle injury suffered in last week's win over Albany, threw for 28 yards and was picked off twice in just under two quarters of action.
Monmouth's Kendall Haley intercepted Patterson on the first play of the game to set up a three-play, 48-yard drive that ended with a one-yard dive by L.J. Caprio. A 41-yard pass from Frazier to Chris Hogan set up Caprio's plunge.
Duquesne drove 59 yards to the Monmouth 13 on its next possession, but came up empty as Eric Duale's 30-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right.
The Hawks then drove 80 yards to take a 14-0 lead on a 12-yard pass from Frazier to Tyler George.
Frazier completed 6-of-8 passes for 123 yards in the first quarter for Monmouth.
MU made it three-straight scores when Caprio hit paydirt from three-yards out to make it 21-0 with 13:02 left in the second quarter. Frazier completed passes of 18 and 25 yards around a Duquesne personal foul to key the three-play, 61-yard drive.
Monmouth made it 28-0 under two minutes later when defensive end Dave Ogden picked off a deflected Patterson pass and took it 31 yards for a touchdown. The pass, intended for Bill Bair, bounced off of Bair's foot in the Duquesne backfield and into the arms of Ogden who scored untouched.
MU tacked on a 20-yard Spillane field goal to make it 31-0.
Duquesne got on the board when Mitchell, on in relief of Patterson, hit Connor Dixon with a four-yard touchdown pass with 1:39 left in the half. Mitchell completed a 50-yard pass to Sean Bunevich to set up the score.
True freshman Ryan Ho returned the second half kickoff 85 yards to the Monmouth one, but the Dukes were turned back three times before Duale kicked a 22 yard field goal.
Spillane answered with a 45 yard field goal to make it 34-10.
Ho returned the ensuing kickoff 71 yards and Mitchell hit Joe Cangilla with a 21-yard touchdown pass on the next play to pull the Dukes within 17.
Spillane tacked on a 34-yard field goal with 11:39 left to give Monmouth a 37-17 lead.
Kenny Amsel returned Duquesne's sixth interception of the game 50 yards for a touchdown with fifty seconds left for the game's final points.
Monmouth outgained Duquesne 440-240 as the Hawks ran 19 more plays than the Dukes.
Duquesne plays its first NEC road game on Saturday, Oct. 9 at Central Connecticut State (3-2, 2-0). Game time is 12:00 p.m.
