DUKES WELCOME ST. BONAVENTURE: Duquesne (9-9, 0-4), coming off a 75-67 loss at Rhode Island on Wednesday, returns home to face St. Bonaventure (9-8, 2-2) on Sat., Jan. 23 at 7:00 p.m. The Dukes will be looking to snap a five-game losing streak against a St. Bonaventure team that posted its first road win of the season on Wednesday at UMass (70-69). This is the 102nd meeting between the schools, with Duquesne leading the series 54-47. The Bonnies are one of three A-10 schools the Dukes will face twice this season (the others are Dayton and Saint Louis). Duquesne has defeated St. Bonaventure more than any school in the A-10 regular season (26-22). Duquesne has been led by 6-7 junior Damian Saunders who leads the nation with 15 double-doubles (including each of the past nine games). Saunders began the week ranked second nationally in rebounding, fourth in steals and ninth in blocks. Saunders' 12.9 rebound average is the best by a Duquesne player since Lionel Billingy averaged 13.1 rpg. in 1973-74. DU will be facing the top big man in the Atlantic 10 in SBU's 6-9 sophomore Andrew Nicholson. Nicholson, who scored a career-high 29 in the Bonnies' 74-68 loss at DU last season, is averaging 15.9 points and 7.9 rebounds on .615 shooting. The 2009 A-10 Rookie of the Year has led SBU in scoring nine times and in rebounding nine times. He is coming off a 26-point outing in the win at UMass.
DUQUESNE LATELY: Duquesne is limiting opponents to 66.4 ppg. ... it is the lowest opponent scoring average since 1981-82 (66.0 ppg.) ... opponents are also shooting .390 from the field, which translates to DU's best field goal percentage defense since 1970-71 (.389) ... last year, Duquesne ranked 309th of 330 teams in scoring defense (74.7 ppg.) and 294th in field goal percentage defense (.462) ... only five teams have shot over 40 percent against the Dukes this season ... Damian Saunders, who has the rare distinction of averaging 42.8 min./g. in conference play (he's played 171 of a possible 175 minutes in DU's four A-10 games), leads the nation in double-doubles with 15 ... his current streak of nine double-doubles in a row is the longest since Bruce Atkins did it 10 times in 1980-81 ... Saunders enters the SBU game needing four steals to pass Aaron Jackson (169) and move into 6th on DU's all-time list ... he needs three blocks to pass Kieron Achara (185) and become DU's No. 2 all-time shot blocker ... THE SERIES: This is the 102nd meeting between the Dukes and Bonnies in a series that dates back to Feb. 13, 1920 ... it is also the 59th consecutive season DU and SBU have met at least once on the hardwood ... Duquesne leads the overall series 54-47 ... in games played at Pittsburgh, Duquesne leads 35-14 ... the Dukes have won eight of the past 11 meetings, however, St. Bonaventure has won two of the past four at the Palumbo Center ... DU head coach Ron Everhart is 4-2 against the Bonnies (2-1 at home) ... last year, DU swept the regular season series (98-80 at St. Bonaventure and 74-68 at home) ... NICHOLSON'S BIG NUMBERS: St. Bonaventure sophomore Andrew Nicholson, the 2009 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, averaged 23.5 points and 10.0 rebounds in two games against the Dukes last season. The 6-9 Canadian went 20-of-26 (.769) from the field in the two games. Nicholson had 29 points (20 in the first half), 12 rebounds and six blocks in 36 minutes of the Bonnies 74-68 loss to the Dukes last year at the Palumbo Center. Nicholson leads SBU in scoring (15.9) and rebounding (7.9) and leads the A-10 with a 61.5 percent (112-182) field goal percentage. Nicholson scored a game-high 26 points on 11-of-15 shooting against St. John's on Nov. 17 and equaled his career-high with 29 points and a career-best 14 boards against Norfolk State. He has a team-high four 20-point games this season, three double-doubles and five double-digit rebound games. Nicholson has led the team in scoring nine times and rebounding nine times this season, including both in the same game on five occasions. He is coming off a 26-point (10-of-18), five-block performance in the Bonnies' 70-69 win at UMass on Wednesday.
ST. BONAVENTURE THIS YEAR: SBU posted its first road win of the season (1-6) on Wednesday at UMass (70-69) ... the Bonnies, who lead the Atlantic 10 in field goal percentage at 48.2 percent, shot exactly their average - 48.2 percent - including 57.1 percent in the second half, in the win ... St. Bonaventure assisted on 17 of 27 field goals and held the Minutemen to 4-of-24 shooting from the 3-point arc ... 6-9 sophomore forward Andrew Nicholson led the way with 26 points and five blocks in 37 minutes ... sophomore guard Michael Davenport added 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds ... the Bonnies led by 10 with just under 10 minutes left ... second-leading scorer, 6-5 senior guard Jonathan Hall (12.1 ppg., 55.6% FG, 53 assists, 22 steals) has missed SBU's past two games with a bruised right foot ... senior guard Chris Matthews (11.4 ppg.) leads the A-10 with 3.1 3-pointers per game ... Matthews has hoisted a league-high 142 3-pointers (52-of-142, .366) ... the Bonnies are second-to-last in the A-10 in field goal percentage defense at 44.3 percent.
SHORTHANDED: Duquesne has had its full complement of players for just two games this season. B.J. Monteiro missed the opener as the second game of a team-imposed suspension (he also missed DU's exhibition game). Melquan Bolding fractured his wrist in the opener and missed 13 games. During Bolding's absence, Jason Duty missed the game at West Virginia with an ankle injury. Bolding, with one practice under his belt, returned on Jan. 6 vs. Richmond. It was DU's first game with all 15 players available. DU then lost in overtime at league favorite Dayton with its whole team. Bolding was then limited to just five first-alf minutes in the 2OT loss to Saint Louis due to strep throat. With Bolding once again back, DU learned prior to the Rhode Island game that Bill Clark would not be available due to a secondary NCAA rules infraction.

#25 Damian Saunders
Junior Damian Saunders currently ranks among Duquesne's Top 10 in three career statistical categories: 3rd in blocks (183), 7th in steals (166) and tied for sixth in career FG% (.524) ... he is also closing in on the 1,000 career point mark (needs 86) ... he needs four steals to pass Aaron Jackson to move into the No. 6 spot ... he is three blocks shy of passing Kieron Achara to be come DU's No. 2 all-time shot blocker ... Missed 13 games and seven weeks of practice while recovering from a fractured wrist suffered in the opener vs. Nicholls State ... returned on Jan. 6 vs. Richmond ... Sophomore B.J. Monteiro (11.5 ppg., 5.3 rpg.) emerged as a pleasant surprise as a starter in place of Bolding ... has led the Dukes in scoring four times ... scored 14 of his team-high 17 in the second half of DU's win over Robert Morris and followed that with a career-high 27 in the double-overtime victory over Canisius ... blocked Eric May's field goal attempt at the buzzer to preserve DU's 52-50 win in his first start, at Iowa on Nov. 17 ... also blocked a Chase Adams field goal attempt with two seconds left to force the Pitt game into a second overtime ... a former high school teammate of Damian Saunders, Monteiro has set a new career scoring high three times this season (18 vs. Arkansas-Monticello, 21 vs. Radford & 27 vs. Canisius) ... his career best, and only double-digit scoring game, entering the season was 12 last year at Dayton ... he has scored in double digits nine times ... pulled down a career high nine rebounds vs. Richmond and matched that total with nine more vs. Saint Louis ...
