Harrisonburg, Va. - Coming off a five-set, two hour plus victory over Bowling Green last weekend, the Duquesne volleyball team played another marathon match Friday night. DU took two hours and 10 minutes in their 3-2 (22-25, 25-23, 25-20, 19-25, 15-13) victory over James Madison at the Sinclair Gym.
Duquesne improved to 4-1 on the season heading into a pair of matches tomorrow for the second day of the Days Inn/JMU Invitational.
Nicole Wright recorded a double-double of 17 kills and 13 digs. Reigning Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week Sara Scheirman and Amy Palko each had a team-best 14 digs. Liz Homan hit a season-high .524 and Chelsea Tillotson added 42 assists.
The match was close the entire way featuring 32 ties and 10 lead changes. After splitting the first four sets, JMU jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the fifth and decisive set. DU would tie the contest four more times, the last being 12-12 after a Wright kill. A James Madison hitting error gave Duquesne their first lead of the set since the opening point. Wright set up match point at 14-12 with her 17th kill of the match. JMU held off one match point, but a service error ended the match with Duquesne prevailing 15-13.
DU will play Saint Francis, Pa. tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. and Hampton at 5:00 p.m.
