Duquesne's women's swimming team completed the fall portion of its schedule with a fifth place showing out of 13 schools at the Akron Invitational, Dec. 4-6.
Day one of the three-day event was highlighted by the Dukes tallying 56 team points in the 200-yard individual medley. Caitlin Zajko placed second in a DU season-best time of 2:07.84 while Miriam McGeath finished sixth in 2:09.84. In addition, Anne Hayles captured seventh place in the 500 free with a team season-best time of 5:06.20 and Meghann McGoldrick took ninth in the 50 free with a season-best time of 23.76.
On Saturday, McGeath captured the first gold medal of the day by winning the 400 IM in 4:30.27. She was followed by Hannah Kondrotas in sixth place with a time of 4:36.56. The Dukes also placed two swimmers in the top eight in the 100 breaststroke as Zajko finished third in a school record time of 1:05.75. Karissa Gorman followed in sixth place with a time of 1:07.43. Morgan Claycomb turned in a fifth place showing in the 100 backstroke with a 58:58 and the 200 medley and 800 free relays finished fifth and sixth respectively.
On the final day, the Red and Blue saw four individuals and a relay tally finishes among the top eight. Kondrotas opened with a seventh place showing in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 17:32.86 to start things off. Then, the Dukes finished 1-4-5 in the 200 breaststroke with Zajko setting another school record as well as a meet record with a first place finish in 2:19.20. McGeath followed in fourth with a 2:24.23 and Gorman added a fifth place finish in 2:25.06. The day ended with DU taking sixth in the 400 free relay.
The Dukes are finished competing for the semester. They will train for 10 days in Pompano Beach, Fla. during Christmas break, before returning to competition on Saturday, Jan. 16 when they take on Cleveland State and Xavier in Cleveland.
