PITTSBURGH - Duquesne University head men's basketball coach Ron Everhart completed the 2008-09 coaching staff today with the hiring of assistant Steve Hall.
Hall, one of the most successful high school coaches in the Detroit area over the past decade, led Detroit Northwestern to its first Detroit Public School League (PSL) championship since 1978 this season. He won three consecutive state titles at Detroit Rogers prior to taking the head coaching position at Northwestern.
"Steve brings a great deal of coaching success to our program," said Everhart. "Obviously he is well respected in the coaching community, especially in the state of Michigan. Steve's work ethic will be a great example for our players. I'm very pleased and honored to have Steve as a member of our coaching staff."
Hall, who coached incoming Duquesne freshmen Eric Evans and Shawntez Patterson last season at Northwestern, was named coach of the year by both the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press. The Detroit native, who won Class D state titles at Detroit Rogers in 2003, 2004 and 2005, has earned numerous additional coach of the year honors.
Hall, who has worked as a staff coach at Five-Star Camps at Robert Morris University in suburban Pittsburgh, was a standout player for Detroit's Cass Tech in the late 1980s. He played collegiately at the University of Washington and Virginia Tech where he graduated in 1993. After playing professionally overseas for three seasons, Hall began teaching and coaching in Detroit in 1996.
"Duquesne is quickly becoming a highly recognized program in the Atlantic 10," said Hall. "I'm looking forward to contributing to - and hopefully enhancing - what coach Everhart has established. There are a lot of good things on the horizon."
The hiring of Hall fills the final vacancy on Everhart's staff. Hall joins second-year assistant Bill Barton and Scott Rigot, who accepted an assistant coach position on May 30, on the 2008-09 coaching staff.
