PITTSBURGH - The Duquesne lacrosse team held off at late flurry from Saint Joseph's to win their sixth game of the season Sunday afternoon at Cupples Stadium, 14-11.
Kat McNish, Ashley Wood, Shannon Hadaway and Liz Fey each scored a hat trick and accounted for 12 of the Dukes 14 goals. Caitlin Carducci made 12 saves for DU. The Hawks' Jenna Martino scored a game-best seven goals on 14 shots.
Duquesne scored the game's first three goals as McNish opened up the scoring 1:54 into the match, followed by Fey from Meghan Frederick 41 seconds later. McNish found the back of the net for the second time at 25:50.
Saint Joseph's got on the board two minutes later on Christina Colangelo's free position shot.
Sarah Carson's goal at 23:03 put the Dukes up 4-1. After an Abby Readinger score, Wood scored back-to-back goals less than a minute apart, McNish completed her hat trick and Janna Faulkner to give DU an 8-2 advantage with 6:31 left in the first half.
Martino got the last goal of the half as the Dukes took an 8-3 lead into halftime.
Duquesne netted four of the first five goals of the second half on a pair from Hadaway, Wood and Fey to give the Dukes their largest lead of the contest 12-4 with 15:59 to play.
The Hawks scored two straight goals from Martino and Colangelo before Hadaway's third goal of the game put DU up 13-6 with 7:24 left.
For the next four minutes, Martino took over the game as she scored five consecutive times to cut the Duquesne lead to 13-11 with 3:20 remaining.
Liz Walker replaced Carducci in net and made two point blank saves on SJU's Abby Renninger in the game's final 68 seconds to secure the Dukes lead. Fey scored with less than a second remaining to give Duquesne a 14-11 victory.
The win improves Duquesne to 3-2 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, which is currently tied for third place with Massachusetts.
The Dukes close out their home schedule Friday afternoon against La Salle. Seniors Tiny Harris, Lea Lamantina and Caitlin Kistler will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
