DENVER - Playing their first of two games in Denver, Colorado, the Duquesne women's lacrosse team dropped a high scoring affair Sunday afternoon to Stony Brook, 21-18. The 39 combined goals were the most in the 12-year history of the program.
The Seawolves' Jenna Celano's free-position goal with 10:09 left in the second half broke a 17-17 tie and SBU's Diana Caroleo's goal four minutes later proved to be the game-winner.
DU's Ashley Wood and Janna Faulkner each scored four times and Meghan Frederick had a career-best four assists for the Dukes (0-3).
Stony Brook's Amy Hallion recorded seven points (4 goals, 3 assists). Melissa Cook and Kaitlin Leggio also added four goals apiece for the Seawolves.
In one of the closest played games from wire-to-wire in recent history, the game featured nine ties and 78 shots.
Stony Brook got on the board early in the contest as Hallion set up Leggio 25 seconds in. Faulkner responded less than a minute later as she found the back on the net off a Wood assist.
Duquesne would fall behind and tie the score four more times in the first half before Frederick's goal off a Kathleen McNish assist gave the Dukes their first, and only, lead of the game 11-10 with 3:23 remaining in the opening half.
Leggio and Brooke Souder scored back-to-back goals late in the half to give the Seawolves a 12-11 advantage at halftime.
DU's Shannon Hadaway tied the score for the eighth time 1:35 into the second half off a free position shot. The Seawolves answered scoring five of the next six goals to take a 17-13 lead with 19:30 left.
Over the next eight minutes, Duquesne scored four straight goals - two from Wood and one from Liz Fey and McNish - to tie the score at 17-17.
With just over 10 minutes remaining, Celano's free position shot and Caroleo's unassisted goal at 6:04 were the deciding goals. Faulkner's fourth goal of the afternoon at 5:04 was the final goal for the Dukes as two late SBU's goals iced the game at 21-18.
Duquesne will remain in Denver as the play the University of Denver Tuesday afternoon.
GAME NOTES
This was the second time Duquesne has played a neutral site game in Denver. The Dukes opened the 2006 season at Denver University's Barton Lacrosse Stadium against Longwood
