Duquesne's women's swimming team wrapped up the fall portion of its schedule with a fifth place showing out of 13 teams at the Akron Invitational, Dec. 5-7.
Day one of the three-day event saw senior Katrina Streiner capture first place in the 50-yard freestyle event with a school record time of 23.48. Freshman Monique Lefort also claimed a gold, winning the 200 IM in 2:07.54 while sophomore Erin Sykes finished third in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:03.16.
On Saturday, freshman Hannah Kondrotas etched her name in the Duquesne records book by swimming a 4:34.88 in the 400 IM which was good for fourth place. Streiner turned in a third place showing in the 100 butterfly with a time of 56.75 while sophomores Tara VanNatta and Briana Mangis finished fifth and sixth respectively in the 100 backstroke with times of 58.12 and 58.69. The Dukes also finsihed second in the 200-yard medley relay and sixth in the 800-yard freestyle relay.
On the final day the Red and Blue boasted six top five finishes. Sykes placed second in the 1650-yard freestyle in 17:22.32 while Kondrotas finished fifth in 17:30.98. In the 200 backstroke, VanNatta finished third in 2:05.54 and Mangis placed fourth in 2:07.19. Streiner placed fourth in 100 freestyle in 51.83 and fellow senior Christina Sherrard was fifth 52.22. In addition, the 400 freestyle relay placed fourth in 3:31.64.
The Red and Blue are finished competing for the semester. They will train for 10 days in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. during Christmas break, before returning to competition on Saturday, Jan. 10 when the take on Cleveland State and Xavier in Cleveland.
