Greg Gary Named Assistant Men's Basketball Coach

April 26, 2007

Greg Gary, who was recruited as a player 20 years ago by Ron Everhart and was later part of Everhart's staff at McNeese State, has rejoined his mentor as assistant coach at Duquesne University.

Gary, who comes to Duquesne after a three-year stint at South Florida, brings 14 years of experience to the Dukes bench.

"I have a long-standing relationship with Greg," said Everhart. "He was one of the first players to sign with me when I was an assistant back at Tulane in the late `80s. Greg is a loyal, hardworking coach who has spent the past seven years coaching at the highest level of college basketball. I'm very pleased to have him as member of our staff."

The 37-year-old Gary has spent six of his past seven seasons as an assistant in the Big East at Miami, Fla. (2000-01 to 2003-04) and USF (2004-05 to 2006-07, note: USF competed in Conference USA in 2004-05). He began his coaching career at Tulane (1993-94 to 1996-97) and returned to the Green Wave for two more seasons (1998-99 to 1999-00) after spending a year under Everhart at McNeese State (1997-98). He has accompanied teams to a total of eight post-season appearances and recruited or coached eight players who have spent time on National Basketball Association rosters.

"I'm very excited to be part of the staff at Duquesne," said Gary. "I've known coach Everhart for a long time and have always admired the way he goes about his business. He is a proven winner who has been successful wherever he's coached. I'm looking forward to contributing to Duquesne's continued success."

A native of basketball-rich Anderson, Ind., Gary played point guard for three seasons at Tulane (1989-90 to 1991-92), where he was recruited by Everhart. Gary, who finished his career as Tulane's all-time assist leader, teamed with current DU assistant Kim Lewis to lead the Green Wave to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1991-92.

Gary graduated from Anderson High School in Anderson, Ind. in 1988 prior to enrolling at Aquinas College in Nashville, Tenn. which was a junior college at the time. He transferred to Tulane following his freshman season.

Gary completed his bachelor's degree in sports management at Tulane in 1992.

Gary and his wife, Claudia, have three daughters, Gabrielle, Logan and Alexandra.
