PITTSBURGH, PA - Duquesne (4-4) coming off an impressive victory last weekend at Howard, was looking to upset #15 Denver Friday afternoon at Rooney Field. The results were not as the Red & Blue hoped as the Pioneers came away with a 21-10 victory.
Sarah Carson led the Dukes with three goals and seven others tallied one goal each.
Denver was led by Karen Morton, who scored five times and had an assist. She tied the game-high with Ali Flury who had three goals and three assists.
The Dukes came out of the gates fast, as Carson put the ball past Pioneers keeper Becky Childs on an assist from Kat McNish just 1:28 into the first period. Sixty-four seconds later Sarah Cates scored with a helper from Courtney Tamasitis.
Denver responded with five straight goals to take a 5-2 lead at the 16:32 mark. The Dukes battled back with the next three goals from Tamasitis and two from Carson to tie the game at 5-5 with 6:52 left in the half.
Once again, the Denver offense came storming back, scoring the next five goals to take a 10-5 lead into halftime.
The uphill battle became tougher for the Dukes as the Pioneers scored the first nine goals of the second half to take their largest lead of the contest 19-5.
Stacie Pollock's goal at 14:37 of the second period started a run for Duquesne who added goals from Keri Drexel, Meghan Frederick, Becky Greene and Meg Cloutman to close the gap to 19-10 with just over three minutes left in the game.
The rally was not enough as Kiley Murphy and Kate Broderick closed out the scoring for Denver and the 21-10 win.
The Dukes were out shot by a 32-22 margin. Meghan Holleran made three saves and Caitlin Carducci had two for the Red & Blue while Denver's Childs and Katie Gold had three saves each. The Pioneers had the edge on draw controls (19-13) and ground balls (20-15).
The Dukes have a day off before they travel to South Bend, Ind. to face Notre Dame April 1. Game time is 1:00 PM. The game is being broadcast live via Fighting Irish All-Access on the Notre Dame Website at und.com
