DUKES HOST BONNIES

Duquesne (10-15, 6-8) hosts St. Bonaventure (6-20, 3-10) at 7:00 p.m. Saturday in a game pitting two teams in the midst of losing streaks (KQV radio 1410 AM and on the internet at www.RedZoneMedia.com). The Dukes, who dropped a 99-90 decision to Charlotte on Wednesday, have lost four in a row, while St. Bonaventure saw its losing streak reach six in an 83-44 loss at UMass also on Wednesday. The SBU game is the second of three in a row at home for the Dukes who complete the home portion of their schedule against Akron on Monday.

Duquesne trailed Charlotte by three with 3:23 left, but faltered from the foul line (3-of-9 in the final 2:57) and missed six of its final seven shots. Charlotte went 13-of-31 from the 3-point arc in the win. Duquesne adopted a running, pressing style of play prior to the Jan. 21 game at UMass. Since making the change, DU has gone 5-5 and flirted with .500 in conference play for the first time since 1993-94 (8-8). Here is a comparison of Duquesne's performance in its first 15 games compared to the past 10:

DUQUESNE LATELY

  • Duquesne can clinch a spot in the 12-team A-10 Championship on Saturday with either a win over St. Bonaventure or La Salle loss (La Salle hosts George Washington at Noon on Saturday)

UPDATE: GW topped La Salle 86-74.
  • DU, which began the season with seven scholarship players, is currently competing with eight ... of the 10 players on the current active roster, just one is over 6-6 (6-10 junior Kieron Achara)
  • With loss of 6-9 F/C Almamy Thiero (blood clots in lungs), head coach Ron Everhart unveiled a "1040" version of the Dukes on Jan. 21 at UMass with 10 players combining for 40 minutes of uptempo basketball ... the Dukes have averaged 91.7 ppg. in going 5-5 since the change in style ... each player in the 10-man group is averaging between 15.4 and 24.0 min./g. as Everhart has substituted a total of 583 times (58.3 subs/g.) - including entire five-man units 91 times (that's 9 per g.) ... in the process, the Dukes posted the school's first five-game win streak since 1985-86 & first five-game conference win streak since 1980-81
  • Duquesne's six A-10 wins are its most since 1993-94 (8-8).

THE SERIES VS. ST. BONAVENTURE

Duquesne leads the overall series 51-45 including a 33-12 advantage in games at Pittsburgh ... the Dukes have won five of the past six between the two ... last year the Bonnies snapped a four-game DU series win streak with a 77-76 victory at the Palumbo Center ... in the first matchup this season, Duquesne set a new road scoring record in defeating St. Bonaventure 111-92 in New York on Feb. 3 ... this is the 97th meeting between Duquesne and St. Bonaventure in a series that dates back to Feb. 13, 1920 ... it is also the 56th consecutive season the Dukes and Bonnies have met at least once on the hardwood.

40 MINUTES OF HEAVEN

Since adopting its new style of play prior to the Jan. 21 game at Massachusetts, the Dukes have compiled a laundry list of accomplishments:

  • This is the first Duquesne team to ever score 90 or more points in four (and five) consecutive games.
  • Swept Dayton, Temple & Xavier in the same season for the first time in school history.
  • Posted the highest point total by a Duquesne team in the 48-game series versus Temple (96-92), the 96-game series with St. Bonaventure (111-92) and the 59-game series versus La Salle (111-105).
  • Set a new road scoring record in a 111-92 win at St. Bonaventure. The previous record for points in a road game was in a 109-66 win at Geneva on Feb. 18, 1953. The 111 points is the second-highest point total in the 40-plus year history of St. Bonaventure's Reilly Center (only No. 3 (AP) Saint Joseph's scored more in a 114-63 victory at SBU on Jan. 24, 2004).
  • The 111 points at St. Bonaventure, in addition to being DU's highest point total in 19 years, was Duquesne's first 100-point game in 10 years (the last coming in a 102-92 win over Radford on Jan. 4, 1997) it is also the most points scored by an A-10 team this season.
  • The 19-point margin of victory at St. Bonaventure eclipsed a 17-point win (72-55) at Rhode Island on Jan. 21, 2004 as the largest margin of victory ever by a Duquesne team in an Atlantic 10 road game.
  • Followed the St. Bonaventure game with 111 more points in a 111-105 win at La Salle, giving the Dukes their first back-to-back 100-point games since 1988-89.
  • Tied the 26-year-old school record for consecutive Atlantic 10 wins (five) with the win at La Salle (the record was set in 1980-81).
  • All ten players have scored in seven of the 10 games since the change

NEW FACE(S)

This is the first season at Duquesne for head coach Ron Everhart who was hired on March 29. Everhart, in his 13th season as a head coach (184-187, .496), turned around programs at McNeese State and Northeastern prior to accepting the Duquesne job. Everhart inherited a Duquesne program coming off a 3-24 season (ranked 308 in the final RPI). Of the 334 programs that competed at the Division I level last season only two - Savannah State at 2-28 and Jacksonville at 1-26 - had fewer wins than Duquesne. Everhart brought his entire Northeastern coaching staff to the Bluff: assistant coaches Kim Lewis, Richard Pitino and Daryn Freedman along with director of basketball operations Anthony Serro. In addition to the new staff, Everhart also retooled the DU roster, bringing in a total of 15 new players (including transfers and preferred walk-ons) in his first five months on the job. To take it even further, Duquesne has a new athletic trainer (Vic Bauer) and two new student managers meaning the only two people on the bench that were here last year are sophomore Aaron Jackson and junior Kieron Achara. Jackson and Achara played a total of three games together last year prior to a season-ending shoulder injury to Achara.

CHARLOTTE LEFTOVERS

Duquesne trailed by two with 4:17 left ... the Dukes, who began the week ranked seventh nationall in free throw shooting, went 3-of-9 from the line in the final 2:57 ... Charlotte's 18 offensive rebounds led to a 30-8 advantage in second-chance points ... DU, which trailed by as many as 11 in the first half, took its last lead with 15:18 left ... Jimmy Sherwood scored 13 points in 15 minutes ... he has 21 points, 5 assists and no turnovers in his past two games (34 total min.) ... Aaron Jackson was scoreless for just the third time in 52 career games (last was Feb. 11, 2006 at Temple) ... Jackson did pull down a team-high 9 rebounds ... Kieron Achara tied his career high with 5 blocked shots ... he also blocked 5 vs. Youngstown State as a sophomore and Robert Morris as a freshman ... Reggie Jackson's 8 assists were a career and Duquesne season high ... Reggie Jackson also extended his consecutive free throws made streak to 17 (his last miss was Feb. 3 at St. Bonaventure).
