PITTSBURGH - Duquesne hit 20 3-pointers and forced 30 turnovers in closing out the exhibition portion of the schedule with a 129-67 win over Seton Hill on Saturday afternoon.
The Dukes, who defeated Millersville 108-87 on Thursday, averaged 118.5 points per game and forced 57 turnovers in two exhibition wins.
Bill Clark and Kojo Mensah led five Dukes in double figures with 20 points each. Clark, who hit 5-of-6 3-point attempts in the win over Millersville, did one better, going 6-of-6 from the arc and 7-of-7 from the field against the Griffins. Mensah, who was 9-of-12 from the field, added a game-high nine assists as Duquesne assisted on 35 of 48 field goals.
"We got comfortable against their zone," said Duquesne head coach Ron Everhart. "I was excited to see the way our guys responded. We moved that thing and made shots."
Shawn James added 14 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks and three steals for the Dukes. Fellow 6-10 forward Kieron Achara scored 18 points on 6-of-7 shooting and added a game-high four steals. Gary Tucker added 14 points for the Dukes who shot 67.6 percent for the game.
Cody Boone and Jordan Thomas led Seton Hill with 24 and 19 points respectively.
Duquesne turned a 9-7 lead into a 30-7 bulge when Tucker buried a 3-pointer to cap a 21-0 run with 12:40 left in the half. The Dukes led by as many as 38 in shooting 71.1 percent in the opening 20 minutes. Eight different players hit at least one 3-pointer as the Dukes converted 12-of-19 from the arc in building a 73-43 halftime lead against Seton Hill's 2-3 zone.
Duquesne's lead reached 64 on a Stephen Wood tip-in with 1:53 left.
"We showed we're not just a press-and-run group, especially in the second half today" said Everhart of the two exhibition wins. "I'm pleased with the play of our freshmen. I think they are all more game-ready than I anticipated."
Duquesne opens the regular season at home versus Howard on Nov. 9 at 8:00 p.m.
NOTES
Duquesne reached the 100-point mark on a Jason Duty 3-pointer with 9:24 to go. DU took a 50-point lead on Duty's second 3-pointer with 7:20 left. Duty's third 3-pointer was the Duke's 20th of the game.
Freshman Bill Clark hit 11-of-12 3-point attempts in the two exhibitions (19.5 ppg.).
The Dukes outscored the Griffins 42-6 in points off turnovers.
The Duquesne school record for points in a regular season game is 127, set in a 127-85 win over Saint Peter's on Feb. 17, 1973. The record for assists is 32 set versus Indiana, Pa. on Dec. 29, 1988. Exhibition games do not count toward school marks.
