Junior Lindsay Hess (St. Henry, Ohio/St. Henry) led the Dukes with 14 kills while hitting an impressive .419 (14-1-31) as the Duquesne Dukes took a 3-0 sweep over Indiana State in the night cap of the Omni William Penn Invitational opening day's action. Senior Amanda Haeg (New Prague, Minn./New Prague) boasted a match-high 16 digs while junior Jenni Gross (Amherst, Ohio/Amherst Steele) rejected a match-best seven kills with one solo and six assisted blocks. Junior setter Kristin Garnett (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) recorded 32 assists in the win.
Indiana State was led by Kelli Whitaker with seven kills and Kristy Cox with 12 digs.
Duquesne won 30-16 in game one led by a five-kill performance from Gross who hit .714 in the game taking seven swings and not making a single hitting error. The Dukes had five team blocks thanks to four from Gross. Hess paced game two's play with seven kills on 13 swings for a.462 hitting accuracy en route to a 30-21 Duquesne advantage. The Red & Blue breezed to a 30-8 win in game three as Indiana State felt the toll of playing back-to-back matches after a 3-2 win over Saint Francis in the second match of the day. Hess had four kills on five swings without a hitting error for a .800 accuracy.
For the match, the Dukes out-hit the Sycamores racking up 44 kills to their 24 and had 58 digs to their 45. The Red & Blue recorded 11 team blocks in the match and landed five service aces.
Duquesne (4-2), defeated Saint Francis (Pa.) 3-1 earlier in the opening match and will begin day two's action hosting Delaware State at 11:00 am at the A.J. Palumbo Center.
