Duquesne University women's lacrosse, under the direction of first-year head coach Mike Scerbo, earned nine Atlantic 10 Post-Season honors as announced today by the Conference office. Seniors Krista Mann (Wooster, Ohio) and Kelly Mulford (Lutherville, Md.) earned first team laurels while junior Stacie Pollock (Kennett Square, Pa.) took second team honors and junior Courtney Tamasitis (Boyertown, Pa.) was named an All-Conference Honorable Mention. Freshman Kathleen McNish (Caldwell, N.J.) was tabbed an All-Rookie team pick and Mann was voted as the league's Defensive Player of the year. Mann and Tamasitis were joined by senior Caroline Gallagher (West Chester, Pa.) on the Academic All-Conference list.
Mann earns her fourth-straight All-Atlantic 10 honor, making her just the third Duke to achieve such a feat, and takes the team's first Defensive Player of the Year laurel. Mann led the Conference in caused turnovers (42) and ranked in the top 10 nationally in that category all season. She stood second in the A-10 in draw controls (46) and committed just 10 turnovers on the season while snagging 45 ground balls. Man set a Duquesne single-game record with eight caused turnovers vs. La Salle and finished her career ranked second all-time at DU with 124 caused turnovers. She stands second on the DU career list with 160 draws won and is fourth with 159 ground balls. The communication studies major also earned Academic All-Conference honors for the second-consecutive year posting a 3.66 overall grade point average.
Mulford takes her second all-conference award after leading the Dukes' attack with 50 goals and 57 points while adding seven assists, 15 ground balls and a team- and Atlantic 10-best six game-winning goals. She ranked third in the A-10 in goals per game and was fourth in points per game. The 2003 A-10 Rookie of the Year ends her career first on the DU list with 15 game-winning goals, third with 152 goals, fifth with 174 points and ninth with 22 assists. She adds 74 ground balls, 38 draw controls and 27 caused turnovers over her four years as well. Her 50 goals this season ranks sixth on the DU single-season list while her 57 points stands ninth. Mulford was ranked nationally throughout the season in goals and points per game.
Pollock, a defender, earns her second-straight All-Atlantic 10 honor snagging a team-best 51 ground balls while adding 20 caused turnovers. Offensively, she scored one goal and recorded three assists. Pollock stood 29th in the NCAA in ground balls per game and fourth in the conference. She started all 16 contests for the Dukes and committed just nine turnovers on the season. In her three seasons with Duquesne, Pollock ranks eight in the DU records book with 118 ground balls, ninth with 65 caused turnovers and adds 25 draw controls.
Tamasitis, a midfielder, was named to the honorable mention list which is in its first year of existence. She ranked second for the Dukes with 31 goals, 10 assists and 41 points while starting all 16 contests. She posted two game-winning scores and scooped up 41 ground balls. Tamasitis forced 17 opponent turnovers and won 15 draws. In her three seasons, she has recorded 68 goals, 88 points, 20 assists, 92 ground balls, 32 caused turnovers, 31 draw controls and five game-winning goals. Tamasitis was named to the 12-member Academic All-Conference team for the first time owning a 3.52 grade point average as an elementary education major.
McNish led the Dukes and ranked second in the Atlantic 10 with 25 assists. Her total stands third on the Duquesne single-season list. She found the back of the cage nine times and had 34 points on the season leading the attack. McNish also picked up 29 ground balls while adding four draw controls and two caused turnovers in her 16 contests.
Gallagher, a midfielder, earns her first Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference award boasting a 3.81 grade point average as an environmental science management major. She was named to the 2005 IWLCA Honor Roll and is a member of the Dean's List, Phi Eta Sigma, SAAC, Director of Athletics and A-10 Commissioner's Honor Rolls. Gallagher ranked fourth for the Dukes with 18 goals and added five assists for 23 points. She collected 32 ground balls, 12 draws won and caused nine opponent turnovers while starting all 16 contests.
Duquesne ended the 2006 season 11-5 overall, 4-3 in the Atlantic 10 tying them for fourth place with Massachusetts in the Conference standings. The Dukes lost the tie-breaker with UMass for the fourth and final berth in the Atlantic 10 Championship. Duquesne posted notable wins over #18 St. Bonaventure and Temple who tied for second in the A-10 standings. The Dukes posted a five-game winning streak mid-way through the season and boasted a 6-2 mark at home.
