Long Branch, N.J. - On the last day of Spring Break, Duquesne University's women's lacrosse team's powerful offense topped Mounmouth University, 18-8, Sunday afternoon at the Hawks' Kessler Field. Senior Kelly Mulford and junior Courtney Tamasitis each scored six points to lead Duquesne's attack.
Duquesne jumped out to early leads of 2-0 and 4-2. Monmouth responded each time and knotted the game at 2-2 and 4-4, the latter mark with 7:43 remaining in the first half. The Dukes tallied four unanswered goals, including Tamasitis' second with 4.6 seconds remaining on the first-half clock. That gave the Red and Blue an 8-4 halftime lead.
The Dukes added two quick scores and logged five of the first six goals in the second stanza to take a 13-5 lead with just under 20 minutes remaining. Mulford netted three goals in about a 10-minute span to put Duquesne up 15-6 with 12:23 left in the game. Sophomore Lea Lamatina scored the Dukes' final marker with 4:06 left. Carolyn Raveia put in the day's final goal two minutes later as Duquesne won by 10-points.
Mulford scored four goals and had two assists and Tamasitis had three goals and three asists. Kathleen McNish scored one goal to go along with her four assists (5 pts) and Ashley Wood had a trio of scores and one assist (4 pts). Senior Caroline Gallagher and freshman Keri Drexel each scored twice.
Monmouth was paced by Carolyn Raveia with three goals. Jeanette Stott added two goals and one assist and Katie Degen accounted for two goals.
The Hawks' Monica Johnson had 11 saves as the Dukes outshot Monmouth, 44-17. DU senior Meredith Norris had seven stops.
The Dukes return to Pittsburgh for a six-game homestand beginning with Canisius, which will take on Duquesne on Tuesday, March 14, 2006 at 4:00 p.m. on Rooney Field
