St. Bonaventure Edges Duquesne, 77-76

Feb. 25, 2006

Box Score

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ahmad Smith scored 23 points and converted a pair of free throws with 3.8 seconds remaining to lift St. Bonaventure to a 77-76 win over Duquesne on Saturday night.

The Bonnies trailed in the contest for only 15.3 seconds as Bryant McAllister capped what appeared to be a Dukes' comeback when he hit two free throws with 19.1 seconds to play. Smith, however, was fouled driving to the basket on the ensuing possession.

Michael Lee added 17 points and Paul Williams 14 points and 14 rebounds for St. Bonaventure (8-17, 2-12 Atlantic 10), which had lost 13 of its previous 14 games.

McAllister had 22 points and a game-high eight assists for the Dukes (3-22, 1-13), who also got 18 points from Keith Gayden.

The Bonnies began the game on a 21-9 run and led by as many as 15 in the first half and 17 in the second half. The Dukes used a late 14-3 run to make a game of it the final four minutes. Their cause was hurt by a technical foul on DeVario Hudson for excessive unnecessary hanging on the rim with 1:53 to play.

Duquesne lost its seventh in a row and 16th of its last 17, its only victory during that stretch having come at St. Bonaventure on Jan. 28.

Since Dec. 27, the two schools are a combined 1-26 in games not played against each other - the only win being the Bonnies' 71-57 triumph over Richmond on Feb. 12.
