Dukes Sponsor Dig for the Cure Match

Oct. 4, 2006

Head Coach Steve Opperman and the Duquesne University volleyball team will once again help in the fight against breast cancer with their "Dig for the Cure" program to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Duquesne's selected "Dig for the Cure" match for the 2006 season will be Wednesday, October 25 when the Dukes host West Virginia at 7:00 p.m. Sponsors can pledge money per dig earned by Duquesne in the match, or can make a flat donation. The money raised goes directly to the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Komen Foundation. You don't need to wait for the WVU match to aid in the cause as a donation box is set up at each home volleyball contest at the A.J. Palumbo Center.

This season marks the second time the Duquesne volleyball team has taken part in the "Dig for the Cure" program. Last season, the Dukes raised over $2,600 for the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

In addition to Duquesne, Atlantic 10 schools Charlotte, Dayton, and Rhode Island took part in the program last season and combined to raise $10,083.45 for breast cancer awareness organizations. This season, all 10 volleyball programs in the Atlantic 10 are participating in the campaign along with Campbell, Cincinnati, Clemson, Florida State, Kansas, Maryland, Miami, Presbyterian, South Florida, and Wake Forest to name a few.

The "Dig for the Cure" campaign was brought to Duquesne by Atlantic 10 partner Charlotte who originally started the program in 2003 by Head Coach Lisa Marston.

Over $36,000 has been raised for the Komen Foundation since the events inception in 2003.

For information about the even or to make a pledge or donation, call the Duquesne volleyball office at (412) 396-5247 or email coach Opperman at opperman@duq.edu.
