Dukes Fall to Charlotte 3-0 in A-10 Play

PITTSBURGH, PA - Duquesne suffered a 3-0 Atlantic 10 loss to visiting Charlotte Sunday afternoon at the A.J. Palumbo Center. Jenni Gross led the squad with 11 kills while Lindsay Hess recorded a team-best 12 digs.

Charlotte (11-8, 1-3) was led by Cori Dayton's 17 kills and Carly Romberg's 23 digs.

The Dukes (7-14, 1-3) suffered a 30-26 loss in game one despite hitting .250 (14-2-48) for the game. Duquesne stayed close until five unanswered Charlotte points gave the visitor a 15-7 lead. The gap was closed to a 25-23 Duquesne reach on a 5-1 scoring drive, but a determined 49ers squad took held on for the win. Poor hitting in game two set the pace for a 30-25 loss and the Red & Blue hit just .077 (14-10-52). The Dukes were within an 18-16 reach in the second stanza, but a 7-1 scoring drive gave the 49ers a 21-16 margin. DU inched to a 29-25 reach on four straight points, but Charlotte put the game away on a kill. After a 3-0 start for Charlotte in game three, the Dukes tied the contest 3-3 and stayed close early until the 49ers sprang to a 7-1 scoring spree for a 13-6 edge. Duquesne got within 15-11 and 13-18 reaches, but five straight points gave Charlotte a 23-13 edge they would not surrender as they went on to win 30-17.

Charlotte held a 61-35 kills advantage and out-dug the Dukes 76-56.

Duquesne is back in action Oct. 6 and Oct. 7 traveling to Fordham and Rhode Island respectively.
