PITTSBURGH - Duquesne University head men's basketball coach Danny Nee announced today that senior guard Jack Higgins (Pittsburgh, Pa./Schenley) will not be returning to the team this semester so he may have the opportunity to concentrate on academics.
"I think it is in Jack's best interest to continue working toward his degree without basketball as part of the equation," said Nee. "It is important that he focus on his studies in order for him to earn what he came here for - and that's a four-year degree. There are no eligibility issues involved. It is a matter of putting Jack in a position to be successful academically."
Higgins, a communication studies major, played in 58 of a possible 61 games following his transfer from Cleveland State in December of 2003. He played in each of Duquesne's first eight games this season with six starts and averaged 9.3 points in 25.0 minutes per game. His 16 3-pointers led the team at the time of his last game.
Higgins, who went 104-of-266 from the 3-point arc as a Duke, finishes his career tied for second on DU's all-time 3-point accuracy list at 39.1 percent. The Pittsburgh native, who was DU's third-leading scorer in each of the last two seasons, scored in double-digits 27 times in 58 games at Duquesne.
The departure of Higgins leaves the Dukes with a nine-man roster.
Duquesne (2-11, 0-2) hosts Richmond (7-7, 0-1) in an Atlantic 10 matchup at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday, January 11.
