Morgantown, W.Va. - Duquesne University's volleyball team opened the West Virginia Classic with a comeback 3-2 win over Memphis, Friday at the WVU Coliseum, their fourth straight victory.
Senior Diana Wuebker led the Red and Blue with 18 kills and 18 digs and junior Amanda Haeg contributed 15 kills. Sophomore Dana McLaughlin had 12 kills and tied Wuebker with 18 digs. Freshman Laura Kastein contributed 14 digs and sophomore Kristin Garnett had 55 assists along with 12 digs.
Memphis took the first two games, 30-26 and 30-22. The Tigers got to within one point of clinching the match in the third game at 29-25 before Wuebker's kill started a six-point Duquesne run for a 31-29 win, keeping the Red and Blue alive in the match.
Game four was a hard-fought contest with the Dukes finally emerging with a 36-34 win, setting up the fifth and deciding contest. Duquesne pushed out to an 8-4 edge. Memphis responded again and took an 11-10 lead on Nancy Nellans's kill. That would be the final time UM was in front. Haeg's kill put the Dukes ahead for good at 13-12 on the way to the 15-13 victory.
Nellans had a game-best 26 kills and 25 digs. Laura Cote' set up 63 winners for the 8-4 Tigers.
In the other match Friday, West Virginia topped Buffalo 3-2 (30-26, 25-30, 30-22, 22-30 and 15-11).
On Saturday, Duquesne (7-3) takes on host West Virginia (8-3) at 12:00 noon followed by a 5:30 p.m. contest with Buffalo (5-5). The rest of the tournament schedule has Memphis facing Buffalo at 2:30 p.m. and then taking on host WVU in the final game of the tournament at 8:00 p.m.
