PITTSBURGH - Duquesne head men's basketball coach Danny Nee named Glenn Gutierrez Coordinator of Men's Basketball Operations in the first of two coaching staff changes announced today. In addition, Rodney Perry, who served as DU's operations coordinator for the past two seasons, has been named assistant coach. Perry replaces John Mahoney who left Duquesne to become the Director of Men's Basketball Operations at West Virginia this week.
Gutierrez comes to Duquesne after serving as an assistant coach for Jim Boone at Eastern Michigan for the past five seasons. Prior to that he was an assistant under Boone at Robert Morris (1996-00) and California University of Pennsylvania (1987-96).
"I'm happy to have Glenn and his nearly 10 years of Division I experience as part of our staff," said Nee. "He is a quality person who will do a quality job at Duquesne."
At EMU, Gutierrez served as the coordinator of scouting and recruiting, organized and coordinated film exchanges and breakdowns and served as the academic liaison in addition to handling a number of administrative office duties. He will head video operations and handle additional administrative responsibilities in his new position at Duquesne.
The 42-year-old Williamstown, W.Va. native began his college coaching career with one-year stints at Winthrop and Charleston Southern before joining Boone's staff at California in 1987. He coached at Cal through 1996, before moving on to Robert Morris with Boone for the 1996-97 season.
Gutierrez, who was an all-state basketball player at Williamstown High School in 1980, went on to become a three-year starter and team captain at West Liberty State College where he completed his bachelor's degree in 1985. He added a master's from California in 1989. Guiterrez and his wife, Ragan, have two daughters, Madison (5) and Meredith (3).
The 35-year-old Perry, who joined Duquesne's staff prior to the 2003-04 season, will assume assistant coaching duties immediately.
"Rodney has proven to me that he is ready to fill the assistant coach position," said Nee. "He is an excellent teacher who will bring a lot of intensity and enthusiasm to the practice floor."
