Washington, D.C. -- In a game played in a steady rain, Brad Scoffern's 25-yard field goal on Georgetown's first overtime possession was the difference as the Hoyas defeated Duquesne, 10-7, at soggy Multi-Spot Field.
Scoffern's winning kick followed a Mark Troyan miss from 40 yards out on Duquesne's first possession of the extra period.
In a game of field position, Georgetown struck first when Marcus Slayton scored from six yards out early in the second quarter. Slayton's run was set up by Brian Tandy's 15-yard return of a 29-yard Duquesne punt that gave the Hoyas possession at the DU 21.
Neither team could manage much offense in a first half that featured 12 punts and 92 yards of total offense between the two teams. Duquesne did not cross midfield until the 4:00 mark of the first half in a drive that ended with a Scott Knapp interception at the Georgetown 20.
Georgetown held on to its 7-0 lead until Duquesne put together a nine play 56 yard drive that ended with a 10-yard Knapp to Dan Spriggs touchdown pass with 11:57 left in the fourth quarter. Knapp, who was sacked a season-high five times on the afternoon, kept the drive alive with a 14-yard screen pass to Jeremy McCullough on a 3rd-and-9 play that gave the Dukes a first-and-goal at the Georgetown nine.
Georgetown had a chance to win the game on the final play of regulation, but Scoffern's field goal attempt from 52 yards out was well short.
Duquesne gained just three yards on three plays on its only overtime possession to set up Troyan's 40-yard try. Troyan, who entered the game 6-of-6 on field goal attempts for the season, was short and wide right on his kick.
Georgetown's Slayton, who finished with a game-high 115 yards rushing on 29 attempts, gained a total of 10 yards on the Hoyas' overtime possession which stalled at the Duquesne eight. It was from there that Scoffern converted the game-winner.
Antoine Bullock led an inspired Duquesne defensive performance with 10 tackles, including 3.0 sacks and a forced fumble. Javonn Bradley added a game- and career-high 15 tackles for the Dukes.
Michael Ononibaku led Georgetown with 13 tackles including a pair of sacks.
Knapp was 10-of-23 for 98 yards and was picked off twice, while Georgetown quarterback Nick Cangelosi finished 4-of-13 for eight yards.
Duquesne outgained Georgetown 169-165 and enjoyed a 11-8 advantage in first downs. The Dukes converted just four of 17 third down plays, while Georgetown was 6-of-20.

POST-GAME QUOTES --
Duquesne Head Coach Jerry Schmitt: "This is the first game we've played in this type of weather. It is tough to open up your offense, because you are limited in some of the things you normally do. It is tough to throw downfield with a wet ball. You have to give credit to Georgetown's defense. They were very strong and pursued well to the football. We've faced three very good defenses in the last three games. We've had to battle for everything. We're going to regroup, take the positives from this game and get ready for the start of conference play next week."
Duquesne quarterback Scott Knapp: "Coming into the game, we had planned on taking more shots down the field, but the wet ball kind of limited us. We just couldn't come up with that big play to finish them off."
