Charlotte, N.C. - Duquesne's volleyball team dropped their first Atlantic 10 Conference match with the Charlotte 49ers, 3-0, Friday night at the Halton Arena. The game scores were 32-30, 30-25, 30-21.
Sophomore Kristin Garnett led the Dukes with 34 assists and a .400 hitting percentage. Junior Amanda Haeg and senior Monica Tinsley each had nine kills. Sophomore Lindsay Hess had nine digs.
Alma Arroyo led Charlotte with 20 kills. Eden Ramos had a game-best 53 sets. Abbey Szlanfucht, who moved into fourth place on the host school's all-time digs list with 1,207, recorded nine kills and nine digs. Carly Romberg led all players with 22 digs in the match
The start of the match was delayed 77 minutes due to late-arriving referees, who were stuck on I-40 outside Durham behind a massive traffic pileup.
The fans were kept entertained by Norm the Niner, who threw volleyball t-shirts and Atlantic 10/Charlotte frisbees into the crowd of 553.
Charlotte's win, their fourth straight victory, evened their overall record at 10-10; the Niners are 4-1 in league play, in second place in the East Division. The Dukes are 10-7, 2-2 in the conference tied for third in the West.
Duquesne will play their second A-10 foe on a 4-match road trip when they take on George Washington (7-11, 1-4) noon Sunday at the Smith Center.
