The Duquesne University women's lacrosse team captured the overall No. 1 seed in the 2004 Atlantic 10 Championship by virtue of tie-breaker rules. The Dukes ended the season with a stellar 13-3 record and boasted a school-record 6-1 mark in Atlantic 10 action. Their mark put the Dukes in a tie for first with Temple, but Duquesne is the only A-10 squad to beat the Owls this season, thus giving them the top seed. Duquesne will face No. 4 seed and host St. Bonaventure on Friday May 7 at 3:00 pm in Corning, N.Y.
The Red & Blue are making their fifth appearance in the A-10 championship after a one-year hiatus last season. Duquesne defeated St. Bonaventure earlier this season 13-12 in sudden-victory in Corning, N.Y. Ginger Flocco led all scorers in that game with four goals while Meredith Williams netted the game-winner :14 into the deciding frame.
Flocco leads the Dukes and the Atlantic 10 in scoring (51 goals) and points (70). Laura App is second for DU with 36 goals, 17 assists and 53 points followed by Kelly Mulford with 34 goals and six assists for 40 points. Williams has 17 goals and 10 assists while Courtney Tamasitis adds 21 goals and three assists for 24 points.
Leading the defense is Kristina Rohall with 27 caused turnovers and she is second wtih 28 ground balls. Flocco leads the team with 53 draw controls while Sarah Pacini has 140 saves, a league-leading 8.30 goals against average and .509 saves percentage.
The winner of the Dukes vs. St. Bonaventure game will face the winner of No. 2 Temple vs No. 3 Massachusetts on Saturday at 3:00 pm. The winner of the Atlantic 10 Championship earns an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
