SAN JOSE, Calif. (Oct. 20, 2004) - The defending ArenaBowl champion San Jose SaberCats continued to stockpile their roster for the 2005 season by signing veteran OL/DL SEBASTIAN BARRIE and rookie WR/DB Yardon Brantley to free agent contracts, general manager Terry Malley announced today.
A six year AFL veteran, Barrie (6-3, 265, Liberty) signed with the SaberCats last February after being released by the Arizona Rattlers. He played in just two games in 2004 posting 3.0 tackles and a sack.
Barrie began his AFL career with Arizona in 1999 posting 47 tackles, eight sacks, seven pass breakups and five forced fumbles in 44 games.
Brantley (5-11, 195) joins the SaberCats with impressive collegiate credentials. A four-year starter at Duquesne University, Brantley ended his career ranked second in receiving yards (2,550), third in receptions (152) and tied for fourth with 22 scoring receptions.
A native of Reading, Pa., Brantley played in all 44 games during his career with the Dukes making 41 starts. He was a 2003 First-Team All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference selection while earning second-team honors in both 2001 and 2002. As a freshman in 2000 he was voted the MAAC Offensive Rookie of the Year.
