Lacrosse Earns IWLCA Academic Merit Award

Duquesne University women's lacrosse has been named a 2003 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association (IWLCA) merit squad for posting the third highest Division I team GPA in the country. In all, 22 universities were named to the IWLCA's inaugural team Academic Squad list.

The Dukes earned Merit recognition with a 3.31 team grade point average for the 2002-03 academic year. The IWLCA recognizes those institutions whose team GPA is at least a 3.00 or greater for the entire academic year with the top three earning Merit honors. Stanford took the top mark with a 3.373 followed by UConn with a 3.37 average.

Individually, Kristina Rohall (West Chester, Pa./Henderson), Carrie Watkins (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) and Becca West (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) were lauded to the 2003 Division I Academic Honor Roll.

Rohall owns a 3.94 GPA in journalism and was named to the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference list and as its Academic Student-Athlete of the Year. She started all 16 contests and was a key component of the defense by marking the opponent's top scoring threat. She ranked third on the team with 17 caused turnovers, while committing just 12 of her own. The junior defender is a member of Phi Eta Sigma and the Society of Professional Journalists as well as a sports writer for the school paper The Duquesne Duke.

Senior Carrie Watkins


Watkins, a senior, started all 14 of her games at attack after missing the first two contests with an injury. She recorded two goals and five assists while collecting 24 ground balls. She led the Dukes with two assists vs. #10 Ohio State and was a solid and consistent player at first home. A three-year starter, Watkins boasts a 3.98 GPA as an occupational therapy major. She was tabbed an A-10 Academic All-Conference honoree and was a member of the Student Occupational Therapy Association.

West was a starter in all 16 games and stood second for the Dukes with 12 assists and fourth with 34 points adding 22 goals. She netted five of her 22 goals in the Dukes' win over Monmouth and posted hat tricks vs. George Washington and Denver. The junior stood tied for seventh in the Atlantic 10 in assists and 15th in points. West has a 3.81 GPA in pre-med / health management systems and was named to the A-10 Academic All-Conference squad and to the Verizon District II At-Large second team. She is a member of Phi Eta Sigma and Pi Kappa Epsilon Health Science Fraternity.

To be eligible for the individual awards, a student-athlete must be a junior or senior and have at least a 3.50 GPA.
