Duquesne captured four of a possible 11 spots on the 2003 Atlantic 10 Lacrosse Academic All-Conference team, including the league's academic Student-Athlete of the Year in junior Kristina Rohall (West Chester, Pa./Henderson). Senior Carrie Watkins (West Chester, Pa./Henderson), junior Becca West (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and sophomore Ginger Flocco (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) join her on the list that was announced today, May 14.
Rohall started all 16 contests and was a key component of the defense by marking the opponent's top scoring threat. She ranked third on the team with 17 caused turnovers, while committing just 12 of her own. The team captain was tied for fifth with 30 ground balls leading the Dukes to a 9-7 record and fourth-place tie in the Atlantic 10. She is a member of the Dean's List, Director of Athletics' and A-10 Commissioner's Honor Rolls. Rohall owns a 3.96 GPA in journalism and is a member of Phi Eta Sigma and the Society of Professional Journalists as well as a sports writer for the school paper The Duquesne Duke.
Flocco, a midfielder, led the Dukes with 42 goals, 13 assists, 55 points, 54 draw controls, 37 caused turnovers and was third with 33 ground balls. She also led the A-10 in caused turnovers and draws won and stood second in goals, fifth in scoring and sixth in assists as well. Flocco ranks seventh in the NCAA in draw controls and 14th in caused turnovers. She tied the DU single-game record with eight draws won vs. Bucknell and her 42 goals ranks fifth on the DU single-season list. A 2003 All-Conference selection, she was named to the womenslacrosse.com honor roll April 17 and twice was lauded as the A-10 Player of the Week. Flocco boasts a 3.04 GPA in elementary education and is a member of the Director of Athletics and A-10 Commissioner's Honor Rolls.
Watkins started all 14 of her games at attack after missing the first two contests with an injury. She recorded two goals and five assists while collecting 24 ground balls. Watkins led the Dukes with two assists vs. #10 Ohio State in the season finale and was a solid and consistent player at first home. A three-year starter, she has 18 goals, 13 assists, 31 points and 71 ground balls on her career. She boasts a 3.98 GPA as an occupational therapy major. She is a member of the Dean's List, Director of Athletics and A-10 Commissioner's Honor Rolls and the Student Occupational Therapy Association.
West was a starter in all 16 games and stood second for the Dukes with 12 assists and fourth with 34 points adding 22 goals. She netted five of her 22 goals in the Dukes' win over Monmouth and posted hat tricks vs. George Washington and Denver. West also had two assists in three contests and stood tied for seventh in the Atlantic 10 in assists and 15th in points. On her career, West has 43 goals, 20 assists, 63 points, 31 ground balls and 17 draw controls. She stands eighth in career goals and points and seventh in assists at Duquesne. West has a 3.77 GPA in pre-med / health management systems and is named on the Dean's List and A-10 Commissioner's and Athletic Director's Honor Rolls. She is a member of Phi Eta Sigma and Pi Kappa Epsilon Health Science Fraternity and is a volunteer at Mercy Hospital's Preferred Choice Hospice of Pittsburgh.
Rohall is the sixth Duquesne Duke to be named the Atlantic 10 Academic Student-Athlete of the Year this season and joins Beth Friday (basketball), Sarah Morrow (volleyball), Micael Lopez-Acevedo (men's tennis), Terry McNelis (men's soccer) and Karen Predmore (rowing).
