Duquesne (4-3) women's lacrosse took an 18-8 victory over visiting Monmouth Saturday afternoon on Rooney Field behind five-goal efforts from Becca West and Laura App. Both also added an assist to lead the game with six points each. Ginger Flocco added four goals and an assist and Sarah Pacini went the distance in goal recording 11 saves on 24 shots. West led the attack with precision scoring on all five of her shots for the game.
Three Hawks hit two goals in Laura Levins, Kaitlyn Robinson and Jeanette Slott.
Duquesne took a 2-0 lead on unassisted goals from App and West in the first six minutes of action before Robinson put Monmouth on the board with an unassisted score at 16:28. They tied the contest at 2-2 with an unassisted goal by Lisa Cherill at 15:37 before West hit goals at 14:48 and 13:17 followed by an unassisted goal by Flocco at 11:38 for a 5-2 edge. Monmouth twice scored in the seventh minute for a 4-5 reach before the Dukes upped their lead to 7-4 at 3:15 on a free position goal by West. Duquesne held a 7-5 edge at the half.
Krista Mann opened the second half hitting the back of the cage from App's give at 24:23, but Monmouth quickly answered with an unassisted score at 23:42 for a 6-8 reach. Back-to-back goals from App put DU up 10-6 and for good. The Hawks got within a 7-10 reach at 19:39, but would not get closer to a lead. The Dukes closed out the period out-scoring Monmouth 7-1 in the final 15:23.
The Dukes open the home Atlantic 10 season on Wednesday, March 26, as they host St. Bonaventure at 4:00 pm on Rooney Field.
