Three Dukes Named Academic All-America

Three Duquesne University women's cross country/track & field student-athletes have been named to the 2002 Verizon District II Academic All-America Team. Senior Kathleen McCabe (Yardley, Pa./Notre Dame Academy), junior Tanya Brown (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame) and sophomore Shea McMillan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) are among the 11 first team honorees. In all, 21 Division I women's cross country/track & field student-athletes were chosen from institutions in Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

McCabe posted a 3.94 GPA in psychology and competed for the Dukes' track & field programs. She reigns as the 2002 Atlantic 10 Champion in the 400 hurdles and was named a first team all-Conference selection. McCabe holds this season's A-10 top-time and set the Duquesne school record in the 400m hurdles. She placed sixth at A-10s as a member of the 4 x 100 relay and seventh in the 4 x 400 relay. McCabe was named Duquesne's Female Student-Athlete of the Year and the Atlantic 10 2001-02 Indoor Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Year for athletic and academic excellence. She set DU season-best times in the 400 hurdles and as a member of the 4 x 100, 4 x 200 and 4 x 400 meter relays this past season as well.

Brown competes in both cross country and track & field for the Dukes and owns a 4.00 GPA in psychology/mathematics. She won a silver medal in the 3,000 steeplechase at the A-10 outdoor championship and finished fourth in the 5,000 meter as well. An ECAC qualifier in the 3,000 steeplechase, she bettered her own DU record with a time of 10:44.00 this past weekend at the ECAC Championships where she placed seventh overall in the steeplechase. Brown set a new DU record in the 5,000 meter with a time of 17:34.93 and is a member of school-record setting 4 x 1500 meter relay with its time of 19:38.80. She was named an Academic All-Conference pick this past season for cross country.

McMillan, the only sophomore on the first team, reigns as the Atlantic 10's Most Outstanding Field Performer for both the indoor and outdoor conference championships. She is the 2002 A-10 outdoor champion in the triple jump and holds the top distance in the A-10 in the triple jump and third-best distance in the long jump. McMillan was a bronze medalist in the long jump at A-10 outdoor championships and also posted the eighth-best time in the A-10 in the 100 meter dash. She set new school records this past season in the long and triple jumps and was the A-10's indoor individual champion in the triple jump. She was named to the indoor track & field academic all-conference team and posts a 3.79 GPA in occupational therapy.

With their first team honors, each will appear on the National ballot, which will be voted on this summer.

In all, Duquesne has had 13 Verizon Academic All-America selections to date - one national team honoree and 12 District II selections.
