Wayne Smith Named All-Conference Third Team

Senior swingman Wayne Smith, Duquesne's leading scorer, was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Third Team, the league annnounced today. And DU's sophomore forward Jon Pawlak was selected to the conference's All-Academic Team.

Smith's now has 1,803 career points going into tomorrow's A10 Championship first round matchup with St. Bonaventure at 8:00 p.m. at the First Union Spectrum in Philadelphia, PA. He's led the Dukes in scoring 15 times and in rebounding in seven of the 26 games he's played this season.

He is averaging 16.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.1 steals, 0.4 blocks and 30.1 minuted per game. He is shooting 43.2 percent from the floor, 36.8 percent from behind the three-point arc and 79.0 percent from the free throw line. This complete basketball player is fifth in the league in free throw percentage, sixth in field goal percentage, eighth in scoring, 13th in three-point field goal percentage and 19th in rebounding,

The Toronto, Ontario, native needs just three points to move into fourth place among Duquesne's all-time scorers, passing Norm Nixon (74-77). He's also set top marks in a wide range of category at DU: 684 rebounds (eighth all time), 172 steals (fifth), 58 blocked shots (third), 500 three point field field goal attempts (third), 35.2 three-point field goal percentage (fifth), 461 made free throws (second) and 613 free throw attempts (fourth).

And he's 25 points away from being the number one Canadian scorer ever in NCAA Division I basketball. Canisius' Michael Meeks (1993-6) currently holds the top mark with to become the top 1,827 points.

Pawlak, from the Pittsburgh area, averaged 5.0 points and 2.6 rebounds while shooting 40.0 percent from three-point range and 75 percent from the charity stripe of play in 19.1 minutes this season. The 6-9, 200 pounder, who saw limited time as a freshman, was originally tabbed for a redshirt year this season but because only nine other scholarship players were available for first year head coach Danny Nee was pressed into action this season.

The Business/Investment Manager major is carrying a 3.29 GPA after a year and a half at DU. He had been named to the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's and Duquesne Director of Athletics honor rolls.
