Youngstown, Ohio – The Duquesne University women's tennis team traveled to Youngstown, Ohio to take on YSU on Saturday morning, dropping a 6-1 decision inside the YSU Indoor Tennis Center. With the loss, the Dukes dropped to 3-7 overall.
The Dukes (3-7) battled throughout the afternoon but were unable to overcome a strong Penguins performance in both doubles and singles play.
In doubles action, Duquesne split courts but came up short in securing the point. The No. 2 tandem of seniors
Alexandra O'Brien and
Taisia Yakunina earned a 6-4 victory over Line Greyling and Lorena Cedeno. However, Youngstown State claimed wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to take the early 1-0 lead.
In singles, the Dukes fought in several tightly contested matches. Sophomore
Naomi Lalonde pushed her opponent to a first-set tiebreak at the top spot, before falling 7-6 (7-6), 6-2. Freshman
Denisse Arinez Guilarte forced a decisive third-set super tiebreak at No. 4 after taking the opening set in a tiebreak but ultimately dropped a 10-6 decision to Yoana Dudova. Duquesne's lone point came in dominant fashion at the final spot, where senior
Taisia Yakunina delivered a commanding 6-0, 6-1 victory over Lydia Foster to put the Dukes on the board.
