- The Duquesne volleyball team makes its season debut at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse this weekend as it co-hosts the Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Classic on Friday, September 5, and Saturday, September 6. The Dukes will open play Friday at 11:00 a.m. against Loyola Maryland before returning to the court that evening to face FDU at 6:00 p.m. Duquesne then wraps up the tournament on Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. matchup at RMU.
- The Dukes are coming off a dominant weekend at the YSU Invitational, where they posted a perfect 3-0 record without dropping a set. Duquesne opened play with a sweep of Canisius, followed by another straight-set victory over Youngstown State later that evening. The Dukes then capped the tournament on Saturday with a decisive 3-0 win against Mercyhurst.
- For the first time since 2011, Duquesne has opened the season with three consecutive sweeps, starting the year with a perfect 3-0 record heading into this weekend.
- Against the Golden Griffins, Two Dukes reached double figures in kills, led by sophomore
Emersen Schrom, who narrowly missed a double-double with 15 kills and nine digs to go along with three blocks and two service aces. Freshman
Karli Jordan made the most of her collegiate debut, recording her first career double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs while hitting an impressive .435 and adding three assists.
- Senior
Carsyn Henschen chipped in nine kills and two digs, while fellow senior
Ariel Helm posted seven kills, three blocks, and a .308 hitting percentage. Junior setter
Chloe Wilmot directed the offense with 39 assists, five digs, and three kills of her own. On the defensive end, senior
Maggie Colenbrander matched her career high with 10 digs and added an assist.
- Against the Penguins, hree Dukes finished with double-digit kills, led by
Emersen Schrom, who posted 13 kills to go along with eight digs and three service aces.
Karli Jordan added 11 kills, two digs, and a block, while
Jordan Robertson matched her with 11 kills, three blocks, and an efficient .318 hitting percentage.
- Running the offense,
Chloe Wilmot notched her first double-double of the season, dishing out 39 assists and collecting 13 digs.
Madison Grimm also highlighted her milestone night with 13 digs, three assists, and a service ace, while
Ariel Helm anchored the defense at the net with a team-high eight blocks to go along with six kills.
- Duquesne ended the weekend it dominant fashion with Sophomore
Emersen Schrom led the way for Duquesne, recording her first double-double of the season with a career-high 17 kills, 11 digs, and six service aces. She notched seven kills in each of the first two sets and added four aces in the opener to set the tone.
- Freshman
Karli Jordan and senior
Ariel Helm chipped in seven kills apiece, with Jordan also contributing four digs. Senior
Carsyn Henschen added six kills, while classmate
Hanna Wilson tied her career high with five service aces and collected eight digs. Junior
Chloe Wilmot directed the offense with her third consecutive 30-plus assist performance, finishing with 30 helpers and seven digs. Defensively, senior
Madison Grimm anchored the back row with nine digs to go along with three assists.
- Duquesne will travel to Oxford, Ohio to compete in the Best Western Invitational, hosted by Miami (Ohio) on Sept. 12-13. The Dukes open play against Southern Indiana on Friday, Sept. 12 at 1:30 p.m. before battling Muddle Tennessee at 4:30 p.m. that evening. Duquesne conclude the invitational against the host Miami (OH) on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 3:00 p.m.
Scouting The Greyhounds – Loyola Maryland, a member of the Patriot League, enters the weekend with a 1-2 record after opening its season at the Buc Dome Invitational in North Charleston, S.C. The Greyhounds dropped their first match in straight sets to Charleston Southern before bouncing back later that night with a 3-0 sweep of The Citadel. They closed the tournament with a 3-0 loss to IU Indy on Saturday. Friday's matchup will mark the 11th meeting between the programs, with Duquesne holding a 7-3 advantage in the all-time series. Offensively, Riley Hamilton leads Loyola with 19 total kills (2.11 per set) while also contributing 2.44 digs per set. Morgan Crawford adds 1.78 kills per set, and Gabi Verdicchio leads the team from the service line with five aces.
Scouting The Knights – Friday night will mark just the second meeting between Duquesne and FDU, and the first since 2000, when the Dukes claimed a 3-0 sweep in the lone matchup. The Knights enter the weekend 1-2 after competing at the doTERRA Classic in Provo, Utah. They opened the season with a 3-0 loss to No. 19 BYU, followed by a 3-1 setback to High Point later that evening, before earning their first win with a 3-1 victory over Central Michigan on Saturday. A member of the Northeast Conference (NEC), FDU is led by Giorgia Vashetti, who averages 2.73 kills per set and has totaled 33.5 points through three matches. Ava Deguzman and Alessia Zampieri have chipped in 20 kills apiece, with Deguzman averaging 2.00 per set. Defensively, Kyndal Ganoe leads the way with 37 digs, while Kylie Nott and Kimber Lang anchor the front line with nine blocks each.
Scouting The Colonials – Dating back to 1986, Duquesne and Robert Morris will meet for the 48th time, with the Dukes holding a 36-11 advantage in the all-time series. Duquesne has won seven of the last 10 matchups, including the past two in 2023 and 2024. RMU enters the Classic with an 0-3 record after competing at the Rocket Invitational last weekend. The Colonials opened with a 3-1 loss to Saint Francis before falling in straight sets to both Albany and Toledo. A member of the Horizon League, RMU is led by Hillarie Adams, who is averaging 2.20 kills and 2.03 digs per set. Azra Eric adds 1.70 kills per set and leads the team at the net with six total blocks.
1K Milestone - Senior
Madison Grimm entered the season opener against Canisius just six digs shy of the 1,000 mark for her career, and she wasted little time hitting the milestone. The defensive specialist notched four digs in the opening set before surpassing the benchmark early in the second. She went on to pace the Dukes with 13 digs in the season opener, while also adding two assists. Grimm tallied five digs in the second set and four more in the third, finishing the match with 1,007 career digs. With the accomplishment, the Ohio native sits in the top 15 in program history to reach the 1,000-dig milestone. Grimm enters this weekend with 1,029 career digs, sitting just 260 digs shy of cracking the top 10 in program history.
Weekly Awards – After her stellar performance this past weekend, sophomore
Emersen Schrom was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week. Following the opening weekend, the sophomore leads the Atlantic 10 in several categories, ranking first in kills per set (5.00), service aces (11), total points (59), and points per set (6.59). She is also the first Duke since 2023 to earn Player of the Week honors, and just the 15th in program history to receive the award. Schrom led Duquesne to a perfect 3-0 run at the YSU Invitational, earning MVP and All-Tournament Team honors. She averaged 6.56 points, 5.00 kills, and 1.22 service aces per set, finishing with 45 kills, 28 digs, and six blocks. Her weekend included 15 kills in the opener, 13 more against Youngstown State, and a career-matching 17 kills with 11 digs and six aces in the finale against Mercyhurst.
