Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University women's soccer team opened a two-game road trip Thursday, improving to 2-0 in the Atlantic 10 for the first time since 2016 with a 1-0 victory over George Washington in Washington, D.C., at Mount Vernon Athletic Complex. The win improved the Dukes to 7-2-1 (.750) overall during the 2025 season.
POINTS OF EMPHASIS
Going on the attack and striking early has become a common theme for Duquesne, and the same held true Thursday in the nation's capital. Just over 10 minutes into the contest, senior
Lindsay Krafchick fed senior forward
Maya Matesa at the top of the box, who placed a perfect one-touch pass to fellow classmate
Brianna Moore, who was open in front of the net. Moore went one-on-one with George Washington goalkeeper Katie Silverstein, finding the back of the net by burying her shot in the lower right corner of the goal to give the Dukes a 1-0 edge at 10:01. Matesa and Krafchick each picked up assists on the strike, which proved to be the only score of the contest.
BEEHIVE
Matesa (8) and Moore (7) combined for 15 of the 22 shots for Duquesne in the contest as the Dukes eclipsed at least 20 attempts for the fourth consecutive match and seventh time in 10 contests this season. Matesa almost found the back of the net in the second half, taking a pass in the box from junior
Kayla Leseck, but her shot went far right. The Revolutionaries kept pace with the Dukes in the opening 45 minutes, getting off nine shots but fell in the category overall, 22-11, including 9-3 in shots on goal. George Washington (3-4-3 | 0-2-0 Atlantic 10) also had a chance at the equalizer late, but a shot from Kathleen Ngulefac at 67:34 went high of the goal, while junior goalkeeper
Ali Hughes made a key save at 85:47 on a shot from Anna Cornejo to help secure the victory.
