McConnell Among Top Five Finalists for Becky Hammon Award

Senior guard is one of two A-10 players to make the final list

Hopewell, N.J. – Senior guard Megan McConnell of the Duquesne women's basketball team has been named one of the five finalists for the 2025 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award, presented by Her Hoop Stats.

McConnell was initially named to the 25-player preseason watch list before earning a spot on the 15-member midseason list in January and advancing to the top 10 finalists in mid-February. Now among the five finalists, she represents one of five teams across four conferences, with three players receiving the honor for the first time. The winner is set to be announced on Wednesday, April 2. McConnell is also one of just two Atlantic 10 players to make the final list.

A native of Pittsburgh, McConnell has been a driving force for Duquesne this season, recently earning the title of Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year. In addition to this honor, she secured a spot on the All-Conference First Team and was recognized on both the All-Defensive and All-Academic teams. The senior guard also became the first player since Jocelyn Floyd in 2013 to receive Defensive Player of the Year honors.

McConnell has been a dominant force for Duquesne, leading the team in nearly every statistical category. As the only player to start all 29 games this season, she has been a model of consistency and reliability. She leads the Atlantic 10 in scoring with 18.8 points per game, total assists (150), and assists per game (5.2). Nationally, she is one of just three players to record multiple triple-doubles while also posting seven double-doubles. She has paced the team in scoring 21 times, recording 11 games with 20 or more points, including a standout 30-point performance, all while shooting an impressive 48.6 percent from the field. McConnell has reached double figures in 28 games and grabbed 10 or more rebounds in six contests. Additionally, she ranks fourth in the conference in three-pointers per game (2.1), shooting 35.5 percent from beyond the arc.

In a remarkable feat, McConnell is the only Division I women's basketball player this season to surpass 500 points, 200 rebounds, 100 assists, and 100 steals. She ranks second in the nation in both total steals (115) and steals per game (4.0), recording 11 games with five or more takeaways. Despite being just 5'7", she holds her own on the boards, ranking ninth in the conference with 7.1 rebounds per game and posting six games with double-digit rebounds.

The Chartiers Valley native continues to etch her name in Duquesne's record book, recently climbing to third on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,713 points. Her defensive impact is just as remarkable, with 115 steals this season ranking third in school history and 347 career takeaways placing her second all-time. Earlier this season, she became only the second player in Duquesne history to eclipse 1,000 career rebounds and now sits second with 1,041.
