6 Dukes Enter Record Books at Carnegie Mellon

Duquesne boasts 17 top-three finishes over weekend

PITTSBURGH -- The Duquesne Men's and Women's Track & Field Teams combined to see six competitors enter their record books while competing at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational this weekend.

Freshmen Louie Liberatore and Joe Klanchar set the second and third-best distances in Duquesne history in the javelin. Liberatore, who qualified to compete at the USATF Under-20 Championships in June, recorded the second-best throw in DU history last week. His distance of 60.02 meters (196-11) was good for second at the CMU Invitational, while Klanchar's throw of 55.30 meters (181-5) earned him fifth place.

Freshman Nadia Constantakis broke her own program record in the pole vault, topping a mark of 3.76 meters (12-4) just a week after recording a mark of 3.71 meters (12-2). Constantakis also set the indoor program record in the pole vault at 3.62 meters (11-10.5) at Youngstown State - a mark she later tied at the A-10 Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Mia Pierce took the top spot in the discus for the second straight week, this week recording a distance of 47.74 meters (155-9), good for third-best in Duquesne history. 

David Williams, who also finished first in the 400 meters at last week's 49er Classic, took the top spot in the 200 meters at CMU. Williams finished fifth with a time of 21.67 seconds, a personal record, which is good for fifth in program history. 

Senior Rocco Caprara's 45.91-meter (150-7) distance in the hammer throw is good for fifth in DU history. Caprara, a Pittsburgh native, took sixth place in his hometown meet. 

TOP-THREE FINISHES
13 other Dukes recorded top-three finishes this weekend. Mara Whalen, Ian Baughman, Jack Barnhisel and Maggie Danzer each claimed first-place finishes at CMU.

Whalen, who has continued the momentum from her strong indoor season, which was capped by an appearance at the IC4A/ECAC Regional Indoor Championships, took first place in the 800 meters with her time of 2:12.76. 

Whalen was also a member of Duquesne's women's 4x400-meter relay team along with Cydney Blahovec, Reagan Ryen and Hannah Seitzinger. The team placed fourth with a time of 4:00.09. Duquesne's men's 4x400-meter relay team also took fourth. The team made up of Belal Abdelrahman, Maxwell Hamilton, Jadon Rahman and Sam de la Riva finished in a time of 3:22.64.

Senior Ian Baughman finished first in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 53.03 seconds. Baughman's time was 0.10 seconds shy of his personal record which he set last week in his first meet with Duquesne, which is also the second-best time in Duquesne history. 

Jack Barnhisel and Maggie Danzer each won the 3,000 meters, with Barnhisel setting a career-best time of 8:32.29. Barnhisel came out on top in a photo finish and his time was good for a new Carnegie Mellon stadium and meet record. Danzer tallied her first collegiate win at a track meet, securing the top spot in the 3,000 meters, and finishing with a time of 10:44.42. 

Amy Allen finished second in the 400 meters with her time of 56.60 seconds. Allen, who also earned a ninth-place finish in the 200 meters (25.61 seconds) finished just ahead of teammate Kaylin Cousin, whose 58.94-second time was good for third place in the 400 meters.

Senior Alyssa Willis finished in second place in the 100 meters. Willis, who holds the program record for the 100 meters, finished with a time of 12.34 seconds. Anna Rorrer took second in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 14.65 seconds. Senior Gina Bolla finished second in the 1,500 meters. Bolla recorded a career-best time of 4:42.48. 

Duquesne saw three competitors take second place in jump events: Rose Kuchera, Caroline Garbe and Spencer Edey. Kuchera, who was third in the A-10 in both the long jump and triple jump entering the CMU Invitational, boasted an 5.63-meter (18-5.75) distance. 

Caroline Garbe, who holds Duquesne's indoor record for the high jump, cleared a mark of 1.63 meters (5-4.25). Garbe also set a personal record in the long jump with her distance of 4.90 meters (16-1). Shippensburg, Pa. native, Spencer Edey's triple-jump distance of 14.33 meters (47-0.25) was good for second place. 

Madelyn Moretti and Isaac Wetzel each finished in third place in the shot put and 400-meter hurdles, respectively. Moretti secured a distance of 14.36 meters (47-1.5) despite adverse weather conditions. Wentzel, in his first collegiate outdoor meet, finished with a time of 54.61 seconds. 

NOTABLE RESULTS

Christian Cupp, Cody Mankowski and Colm Matheney all set three personal records at CMU. Cupp. a sophomore, finished fifth in the 400 meters with his time of 49.15 seconds. Cupp also recorded a toss of 11.50 meters (37-8.75) in the shot put and cleared a height of 3.63 meters (11-10.75) in the pole vault. 

Mankowski placed 12th in the javelin with his distance of 50.21 meters (164-9), recorded a distance of 35.40 meters (116-2) in the discus and finished the 400 meters in 52.16 seconds. 

Matheney took 15th place in the pole vault, clearing a height of 3.93 meters (12-10.75). Matheney also notched a distance of 45.99 meters (150-11) in the javelin, and set a mark of 1.74 meters (5-8.5) in the high jump.

Both Ryley Schwalm and Casey Padgett recorded fifth-place finishes in the 3,000 meter Steeplechase. Schwalm, a junior from Pottsville, Pa., recorded a career-best time of 11:42.80. Padgett set a new record for himself with his 9:37.24 finish. 

Sam de la Riva, in addition to his fourth-place finish with the 4x400-meter relay team, took fourth place in the 800 meters with his time of 1:55.22. de la Riva finished just before teammates Gio Mastromonaco and Jadon Rahman. Mastromonaco, in his first collegiate outdoor 800 meters, recorded a time of 1:55.41, taking fifth place. Rahman finished in sixth place with his 1:55.57 time.

Freshman Lauren Stroka recorded a outdoor personal record in the triple jump. Stroka, a Dubois, Pa. native, cleared a mark of 11.24 meters (36-10.5), good for fifth place, in her second outdoor collegiate meet. 

Junior Ben Colli set a career-best time in the 3,000 meters, finishing in 8:51.19 en route to a fifth-place finish. Colli finished just ahead of his teammate Anthony Ciecierski, who recorded a personal-best time of 9:04.67 and finished in eighth place.

Duquesne will compete in George Mason's Dalton Ebanks Invitational at George Mason Stadium in Fairfax, Va., on Friday, April 4, and Saturday, April 5.
