VCU Pulls Away From Duquesne

PITTSBURGH – The Duquesne lacrosse team dropped a home Atlantic 10 matchup on Saturday, falling 17-9 to VCU at Rooney Field.

The Rams (5-5, 3-1 A-10) jumped out to a 6-1 lead after the first quarter and extended their advantage to 7-1 early in the second. Duquesne (5-4, 2-2 A-10) responded by scoring four of the final six goals of the half, trimming the deficit to 9-5 at the break.

Mackenzie Leszczynski and Tristen Chang found the net early in the third quarter to bring the Dukes within three (10-7) at the 10:15 mark. However, VCU answered with four straight goals and closed the game on a 7-2 run to seal the win.

Leszczynski, Corinne Webb, and Haley Reeck each tallied two goals to lead the Duquesne attack. Chang, along with freshmen Addison Scanlon and Megan Marco, each added one goal.

Sophomore Gracin Emerson recorded a game-high four assists, marking her third game this season with at least four helpers. Chang also added an assist for a two-point performance.

Defensively, Casey McBride notched a season-high three caused turnovers, while Faith Conaty collected a team-best four ground balls.

Leszczynski secured a game-high seven draw controls to bring her career total to 196 — just two shy of second place in program history. Chelsea Evans added five draw controls, two ground balls, and two caused turnovers.

QUOTABLE

"It was a disappointing loss. We had our opportunities, but digging ourselves into such a deep hole in the first quarter made it difficult to recover. That said, there were areas where we showed improvement, and I'm pleased with the progress in those aspects. The team responded well to in-game adjustments, but we couldn't string together the stops we needed. Now, we have to learn from this and shift our focus to Wednesday against St. Bonaventure," said head coach Tracy Coyne postgame.
