Dukes Fall to St. Bonaventure

PITTSBURGH – The Duquesne lacrosse team fell to St. Bonaventure, 20-12, on Wednesday at Rooney Field.

The Dukes (5-5, 2-3 A-10) were unable to overcome an early deficit as the Bonnies (7-4, 3-1 A-10) scored the game's first six goals in the opening nine minutes. Duquesne responded with three straight goals to cut the deficit to 6-3 early in the second quarter but never got closer. St. Bonaventure closed the first half on a 4-0 run to take an 11-4 lead into the break.

Duquesne put up five goals in the third quarter, highlighted by three from Corinne Webb, but a 6-1 scoring surge by the Bonnies put the game out of reach.

Webb finished with a career-high six goals, all in the second half. Mackenzie Leszczynski recorded two goals and three assists for a five-point performance.

Addison Scanlon, Mia Piocquidio, Chelsea Evans, and Gracin Emerson each scored once, with all but Evans' goal coming from free-position shots. Emerson also dished out three assists, extending her streak to seven straight games with an assist and bringing her season total to 20.

Scanlon, a freshman from Frederick, Md., has now scored in four consecutive games.

Hanna Pawela anchored the defense with four caused turnovers, four ground balls, and a team-high five draw controls. Casey McBride added four ground balls and a caused turnover.

Freshman Korrigan Sweeney made her first career start in goal, playing over 25 minutes and recording four saves. Megan LaBorne saw 34 minutes of action and also made four saves.

QUOTABLE

"Once again, we got off to a slow start, and it's tough to overcome that kind of deficit. We battled back and closed the gap, but we couldn't sustain the defensive stands we needed. Corinne (Webb) was phenomenal today — she was on fire. I thought Kelsea Cooke and Averi Foster were instrumental in helping us on the draw and building momentum. At the end of the day, we have to put together a full 60-minute game," head coach Tracy Coyne said postgame.
