Dukes Downed at UMass

PITTSBURGH – The Duquesne University lacrosse team fell to Massachusetts, 19-7, on Saturday afternoon.

The Minutewomen (5-3, 3-0 A-10) opened with a 7-0 run and led 13-3 at halftime. The Dukes (5-3, 2-1 A-10) held UMass to six second-half goals and outscored them 2-1 in the fourth quarter.

Tristen Chang led Duquesne with two goals, both coming in the final frame. Kelsea Cooke scored for the third consecutive game, while Chloe Holmes tallied her first goal of the season. Chelsea Evans, Haley Reeck and Addison Scanlon also found the back of the net.

Casey McBride recorded her first career assist on the Cooke goal just over a minute into the second half.

Freshman Korrigan Sweeney tied her season high with 10 saves in relief of Megan LaBorne, playing the final 42 minutes in goal.

Duquesne returns to Rooney Field next Saturday (March 22) for a matchup against VCU at 1 p.m.

QUOTABLE

"Today's performance was very, very disappointing. Honestly, things didn't go well from the opening draw. We gave up an 8m goal in the first 30 seconds and it went downhill from there.

We were never in the game. We didn't show up ready to compete. When you play a team like UMass, a program that has an established winning tradition, you have to be ready to compete from the opening whistle. We weren't ready and it showed in our performance," said head coach Tracy Coyne postgame.
