Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University women's golf team opened the spring portion of its 2024-25 season this weekend, finishing 12th at the Columbia Classic. Over the course of 54 holes at Duran Golf Club in Melbourne, Fla., the Dukes posted a team score of 960.
TEAM LEADERBOARD
Claiming the team title at the Columbia Classic was Illinois State, which closed round three Sunday with a 286 (-2) and finished at 868, just four strokes over par. Princeton (872) finished second, with Dartmouth (889), Penn (894) and Seton Hall (896) rounding out the top five. The field was completed by Emory (902), Boston U. (904), the host Lions (906), Marshall (910), Youngstown State (911), Quinnipiac (920) and the Dukes.
LEADING THE WAY
Freshman
Sasha Petrochko led the Dukes individually and has been remarkably consistent during her rookie campaign. She handed in a 54-hole score of 227 (+11) to finish in a tie for 24th with six other student-athletes. Petrochko opened with a 76 (+4) in the first round before carding a 75 (+3) and closing the tournament Sunday with a 76. She posted a trio of birdies, including one in each round and each that came on the back nine. Completing a triple crown of birdies, in the first round Petrochko birdied the 475-yard par five at No. 15, added a birdie in the second round at No. 14, a par four at 376 yards, and Sunday carded a birdie at No. 13, a 149-yard par three.

As a team, Duquesne notched 14 birdies throughout the tournament while also scoring par on 133 occasions. In addition to the three birdies for Petrochko, freshman
Katie Caryl notched a trio, including No. 13 in the second round. Freshman
Abby Slankster finished with the most birdies for the Dukes during the course of competition, registering four, including three in the first round. On the back nine during the first round, Slankster collected consecutive birdies on No. 11, a 476-yard par five, as well as on the 385-yard par four at No. 12. She also notched a birdie at No. 18, a 370-yard par four to help her finish even (36) on the back en route to her best round of the tournament at 75 (+3).
THE LINEUP
Junior
Lindsey Powanda saved her best round for Sunday, closing at 75 to finish the 54 holes at 239 (82-82-75). Slankster finished four strokes back at 243 (75-87-81), while freshman
Katie Fodale handed in a 251 (86-86-79). The lineup was rounded out by freshman
Paige Meyers and Caryl. Playing as an individual, Meyers finished at 262 (89-86-87), while Caryl carded a 269 (89-92-88).
UP NEXT
Duquesne returns to the Sunshine State next month for its next competition, heading to Vero Beach, Fla., for the NKU Spring Fling. Hosted by Northern Kentucky, the tournament will be played at Sandridge Golf Club.
