Duquesne Fends Off Seawolves to Cap Homestand

Forward John Hugley IV scores game-high 25 points, eclipses 1,000 points for career

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University men's basketball team closed out a three-game homestand Saturday at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse with an 84-75 victory over Stony Brook. The win improves the Dukes to 6-3 (.667) overall during the 2025-26 campaign.

POINTS OF EMPHASIS
Forward John Hugley IV, who scored eight of the first 10 points of the game for Duquesne, took a lob from senior guard Tarence Guinyard with under four minutes to go. Hugley IV provided the slam, giving the Dukes a 76-66 edge with 3:48 to play. He added a floater two minutes later to push the lead to 78-70, but Stony Brook (6-3) had one last charge. Another floater, this time from Erik Pratt, closed the Seawolves to within 80-75 with just over 30 seconds remaining, but junior guard Jimmie Williams helped seal the victory, picking the pocket of Goods and providing the finishing touches on the win with a slam with 9.7 seconds left.

QUOTABLE
"We cleaned up possessions by rebounding the ball pretty well, especially in the first half," head coach Dru Joyce III said. "Overall, we contested shots. We gave up a little too much in the second half, but that's a good offensive team. They started to figure some things out. When you look at the aspect of a game, there's always a scenario where you need key stops to win the game. There are a couple losses on our record where we didn't do that. In this game we got key stops down the stretch and got rebounds. I would love our defense to be able to cover up everything, but that's just not the case. Screens and movement are made to create an advantage. We'll continue to adjust."

MEDICINE HAT
Hugley scored a game-high 25 points in the win over Stony Brook, reaching the 20-point plateau for the fourth time in seven home games. He buried a pair of three-pointers on consecutive possessions to open the scoring, and his tip-in at the 9:07 mark of the first half not only gave Duquesne a 21-16 lead but helped Hugley IV eclipse 1,000 career points at the collegiate level. Hugley IV has appeared in 114 career games over the last six seasons, including 48 starts, and owns 1,014 points, an average of 8.9 per game. Against the Seawolves, he finished 8-of-15 from the floor, including 2-for-5 from deep, and was 7-for-8 at the free-throw line. He also added five rebounds and a pair of assists.

QUOTABLE
"I just want to give a special thanks to my teammates and my coaches for believing in me, trusting in me and calling plays for me to go score the ball," Hugley IV said. "I'm just grateful to be here, be in this position and continue to have a great college career. I'm grateful that I get to put this uniform on and share the court with my teammates."

QUOTABLE
"Any time you reach a milestone of 1,000 points in your college career, it's an accolade that shouldn't just be looked over," Joyce III said. "It comes with a testament of hard work and consistency. Not everyone knows how to put the ball in the basket even though they know how to play basketball. John has sharpened his skill set since his time back in high school. He's continued to get better and improve his game year after year. It's a testament to being in the gym, to loving the game and hard work."

COMET SHOWER

He also added averages of 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists as Duquesne finished 2-1 during the stretch. The Dukes also got a burst from junior forward Jakub Nečas, who missed his first career double-double by a rebound by adding 11 points, nine caroms and a pair of blocks. He produced a three-point play with 10:31 remaining that gave the Dukes a 62-51 cushion, and his triple at the 8:45 mark of the second half kept the lead in double digits, 67-57.
